An older study, but I’d say still relevant.

What would you say are the key drivers behind this?

I can certainly see heat as being a key component, but then there are states like Florida, New Mexico, and Arizona that are middle of the pack, so it cannot be just heat alone. Other possibly reasons for low ownership I can think of are dangerous drivers, bad roads, populations with large urban areas and not enough back roads. What do think really drives this? I mean, why is Alabama at 32, and Louisiana at 49?

So it boils down to being culturally acceptable?

Sir, you do know that this is a Louisiana based site?

Oddly enough, Louisianians are for the most part, smart enough to not ride Donorcylces

Mississippi apparently is even odder still smarter than Louisiana, yet both rank at the very bottom in education. Not sure I’m buying that argument.

South Dakota has Sturgis. Wisconsin has Harley Davidson.

But I think that those states at the top have long winters and people enjoy getting on their bikes in the summer. They also have less population so they can get on their bikes and actually ride not sit in traffic.

Just heat? Not cold?

Just spitballing, I'd guess the milder the weather, the more bikes.

Yeah. But besides those states I have trouble making out much of a trend in these stats.

You know it is springtime in Wisconsin when you hear the large groups of figs driving through the countryside.

South Dakota has Sturgis.

No. 2 New Hampshire hosts the Laconia Motorcycle Week in June since 1916. Expect 300,000 riders this year.

Has more to do with humidity and the sheer force of rain.

Riding in the heat out west is enjoyable. There is no humidity and the air movement keeps you cool. This does not work as well in more humid areas.

Also, Gulf weather means sheets upon sheets of rain at any time. I do not enjoy riding in that.

Damn, Utah is very low on the list. I would have thought it much higher. During the summer months, motorcycles are everywhere in that state.

That is surprising. The west, especially areas near national parks tend to have a very vibrant motorcycle culture, especially adventure and dual purpose bikes, or that’s my perception at least with all of the BDR routes around there.

Is it really the motorcycle or is it the unplugged and dangerous drivers?

Certainly both

Come hang out in a major metro area where those psychos weave through traffic and pass between and around lanes of traffic.

Those people are insane and dangerous human beings regardless if it’s on a bike or in a car, and I realize we know of two types of motorcycles here for the most part, cruisers and crotch rockets, mostly because they get all the attention, but there are plenty of people riding motorcycles that don’t fit in those categories and still within those categories or not ride very defensively, responsibly, and assume they are invisible to drivers on the roads, because you had better.

This is the case with very few riders. Just like anything, we notice the worst only and then give that trait to the majority.
