And of course, the dire warning issued by the National Weather Service in New Orleans on the night of August 28th:

Urgent – Weather Message
National Weather Service New Orleans LA
1011AM CDT Sun Aug 28 2005
…Devastating Damage Expected…
.Hurricane Katrina…a most powerful hurricane with unprecedented strength…rivaling the intensity of Hurricane Camille of 1969.
Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks…perhaps longer. At least one half of well constructed homes will have roof and wall failure. All gabled roofs will fail…leaving those homes severely damaged or destroyed.
The majority of industrial buildings will become non functional. Partial to complete wall and roof failure is expected. All wood framed low rising apartment buildings will be destroyed. Concrete block low rise apartments will sustain major damage…including some wall and roof failure.
High rise office and apartment buildings will sway dangerously…a few to the point of total collapse. All windows will blow out.
Airborne debris will be widespread…and may include heavy items such as household appliances and even light vehicles. Sport utility vehicles and light trucks will be moved. The blow debris will create additional destruction. Persons…pets…and livestock exposed to the winds will face certain death if struck.
Power outages will last for weeks…as most power poles will be down and transformers destroyed. Water shortages will make human suffering incredible by modern standards.
The vast majority of native trees will be snapped or uprooted. Only the heartiest will remain standing…but be totally defoliated. Few crops will remain. Livestock left exposed to the winds will be killed.
An inland hurricane wind warning is issued when sustained winds near hurricane force…or frequent gusts at or above hurricane force…are certain within the next 12 to 24 hours.
Once tropical storm and hurricane force winds onset…do not venture outside!

I'm sorry to all those that this happened to. Please know I didn't start this thread with the thought of bringing up bad memories, just wanted to remember the incredible event that it was.

I can still vividly remember what my house smelled like when we were finally able to get to it. I hate this day.

Where I'm sitting right now had 10 feet of water. Pretty wild

dude I still get the chills watching that radar gif....
I still...15 years later remember waking up that morning at my parents house watching this whole thing unfold and was relieved that we dodged a bullet......then the longer I laid on the couch watching the nola TV coverage and slowing hearing them say the water was rising in certain parts of the city..I didnt understand....I was confused...the storm had passed...I thought we were in the clear...I thought we dodged a bullet...
then as the day went on I kept hearing more and more about parts of the city were flooding...then hearing that there were breaches in the levees...i was still confused...
after a day or so of not knowing what the frick was going on...my neighbor, who was a US Coast Guard HELO Pilot was rescuing people off rooftops....I called his wife who had..ironically evacuated to Lake Charles, and asked if she had talked to him.....she said "Yes...our homes are flooded.....she said we had 7' of water on the street and at least 4' in our homes.....
That moment changed my life forever....
I will never forget that phone call....then after that I had friends that stayed and went down my street in a boat taking videos and sent to me and it was real.......I didn't lose EVERYTHING...we "only" had 4' of water in our house for 10 days.....but I lost enough and even though it changed my life forever...a lot of good came out of it...however...I would never want to go through it again......I dont know how my life and marriage survived....
it was the toughest and most stressful 16 months of my life...we finally were able to move back in to our house a week before Christmas 2006

It was strange to me how little we were impacted weather wise in BR and just 60 miles away all hell was breaking loose. It was indeed strange times after the storm around here though.
Coastal Mississippi was just utterly destroyed. Just a terrible time.

it's so surreal to even look back....we even have several scrap books we made with all the pics that we took....we have several camcorder video tapes as well....I even have footage and pic of the entire Mississippi Coast that my wife and I took a few weeks after the storm
I have one awesome video that we took when me and some friends came help me to clear some shite out the house...we videoed us take my refrigerator out the house and taking it to the road.
After telling him not to open the freezer bc it was full of shrimp and fish.....he opened it and I have the whole thing on video of him throwing up all over the driveway

After that we went to the Quarter and Bourbon Street to get some beers at Johnny Whites....there were people that were still there since from when the storm hit...this was like 12 days later on Sept 12th, I'll never forget that day....
we interviewed some of the people at Johnny Whites and have it all on video.....I need to convert all this footage to digital and put it on YouTube......it is really incredible footage

Our house wasn’t totally destroyed but will always stick with me is that we signed the paperwork to officially become homeowners that Friday morning Aug 26 before anyone really knew the direction it would end up going. We spent the rest of that Friday and Saturday moving in while watching her get closer and closer, Sunday afternoon me and my wife both broke down thinking we were about to lose the house that we had owned for less than 3 days. Compared to the people that were flooded out and lost everything we were lucky but that was a stressful 3 days I’ll never forget and hopefully never go through again.

I have a serious question for you... at one time Katrina was a cat 5 with 175 mph winds. It went down to a cat 3 at landfall. Still a very bad storm... BUT what would it have been like if the levees did not fail in New Orleans?????

That’s one of the things that sticks out to me after all these years, I can remember that warning on the radio

I work with a bunch of transplants who moved here after Katrina. They will ask me occasionally for Katrina stories and it’s always hard for me to put in words. What you said is the only way I can describe it. I don’t wish those times on anyone. It was a truly miserable experience.

Some wind damage. I was in the Lower 9th Ward when it hit and remember thinking we dodged a bullet getting the west side of the storm. Really didn't seem too bad...until a couple of hours later.
