That's a crazy experience of OP. But your attn to detail caught my eye. Wouldn't it be cheaper to let some carbon monoxide in there in a few cells every now and then to lessen the burden of the tax payers?

Lol, underrated comment.

Nah, bama sends more fans to prison à la Harvey Updyke and the bourbon street teabagger. Yall also got a former bball player who could end up on death row.

Odd to say the week of a suicide to avoid an arrest... but congrats for powering through.

I assume those were installed after the electric chair was removed.

Statistically 1 of every 50 people on death row anywhere in the US is innocent of the crime they are sentenced to die from. On Georgia's death row that number is 1.5 per 50. Statistically Georgia has executed 2.34 people since 1973 who was not guilty of the crime they committed. Of the 33 men currently at Jackson State's death row this morning statistically one of them is living the most unimaginable hell - facing execution for a crime you did not commit.

I don't know what the number of innocent people killed erroneously by the state is acceptable to the people of this nation but I know what number should be acceptable....zero. I suspect it is probably around 20-50% for most of us unfortunately....

look im not saying every single one of those dudes are innocent, but lets not pretend like we havent executed innocent men before

2% of those convicted and sentenced to death in the United States since 1973 have been EXONERATED for the crime they were convicted of. It is illogical to conclude that less than 2% of those actually executed were not equally innocent of the crime they were convicted of.

The organizations which have worked diligently to prevent society being guilty of outright cold blooded murder has 21 cases which are pretty solid examples of people who were executed who were not guilty of the crime they committed. There is mathematically no way around the fact that innocent people have been executed in the US. I don't know what the acceptable number of such people being executed is but I know what it ought to be....NONE.

Agreed for the most part. Due to work I’ve been in several jails and been to Angola plenty of times. Death row at Angola is the nicest part of the prison since it is the newest. Hell, it’s nicer than most of the administration offices in some respects. The first time you go, there can be some “awe” by people because of their perception of the people there. But that’s on the person there and how they feel.

Now there are people in other parts of Angola who are truly evil. There’s people who have killed people and done terrible things and they are scared of some little guy that nobody talks to or goes around and they all just don’t mess with them. Sometimes you can “sense” that, sometimes they actually seem like nice normal people. Those are the scarier people IMO.

I am certain its higher there and probably higher per capita in North Korea. Not sure how that matters in relation to what happens in the United States,

It’s just a fricked up day but those smoke detectors got tested before they get smoked is the good thing!

Never been to Jackson State but I worked at the Atlanta Federal Pen once for about 4 weeks and we got locked down in it one Thursday just before quitting time because 2 inmates were missing. They found them about 2 hours later in the laundry doing their job but they had been somewhere they weren't supposed to have been for some period. It took the prison about 8 hours to release us though....apparently they had to count every inmate and account for every single person in the complex because those 2 were missing. If I were a prisoner I would go missing every chance I could just to frick with them if that is the case....

It was not fun working at the Federal prison. We had to be bussed in and out and we were around inmates a good bit of the time....not to the point where conversations were possible but close enough to get a kind of feel for the misery and desperation present. I don't know how people work there every day and maintain their sanity.

I interviewed for a job as a vocational trainer at the federal prison in Atlanta just after this. I asked the interview committee if it was new job and they said no....I asked them why they needed a new trainer and they sort of side eyed one another and then told me that the person who had the job had been attacked and was not able to continue in the position LOL. I was not overly interested in the position before I heard this bit of information....I wasn't remotely interested in it afterwards LOL....

ironic we have life saving safety devices in death row

Probably have 2-3 employees for every 5 or so inmates in the area....presumably exits would be locked for the most part so some early notification for the employees of a fire would sort of seem necessary....

You should have me as an employee then.

I’d walk through there asking them if they had seen any good movies lately and how I can’t wait for football season.

I mean really.. what’s going to happen? A marvel villain kick open the door and attack you?

Curious to know with all those "facts" if you've also included those that got off on a technicality yet are grouped in as "innocent".

"Since 1973"... because tech has remained stagnant for the past 50 years lol

The anti-death penalty crowd just ignores the fact that we are more sure than ever about convictions, and multiple avenues of technology give us multiple methods of verification that we just didn't have back in the day.

Cell phone GPS, cameras everywhere, forensic science in general has came a long way.

I don't know if we can ever get it completely perfect, but I would wager the innocent number is closer to 1 in 250 or 1 in 1000 than it is 1 in 50 as we sit today in 2025.
