They way he set it up, you knew it would be great. Norm said he heard the joke from his cabby to which Conan said let’s just have him tell it. Norm’s response was “wait until you hear me tell it”. The moth joke is in a ton of kids joke books across the land. We all knew what was coming but the details that Norm added on the fly made it legendary. Years later Norm was on another show and he gave some more insight on “the moth joke”.

Long story short, Norm thought he was just on for one segment with Conan. After the 1st segment was done, Conan looked at the camera and said we will be right back with more Norm. Norm turned to Conan and said that he didn’t really have anything to talk about to which Conan just said we will just talk.

Apparently Norm had been with Colin Quinn recently and he had told Norm his version of the moth joke so Norm thought that could kill some time. Norm asked Conan how long was the segment to which Conan said about 7min. Voila, the 7 min moth joke was created!

I haven't seen anyone mention his impression of David Letterman but he nailed it. So funny.

He kind of explained his process and said something to the effect of, I pretty well have a strong punch line so I can dance around it and ad lib leading up to there.
