I’m a little jealous of people who lived without technology

Obviously I like the comfort of AC, electricity, television, internet etc…. But I feel like life would have been so much simpler and better in a lot of ways before it. You just basically spend all your time outside with people, reading and writing, doing whatever. No way to be connected, no one can call you and bother you. And since none of this technology existed you wouldn’t be missing it.

Simpler times…

It was great in the 70s. We just didn’t know it. Playing outside in the woods until dark. No social media. Using your imagination to make up games with other kids in the neighborhood to fill up a day. And the roar of that attic fan when you flipped the switch to pull that breeze through the house at night. Good and simple times.

Was born in the late 50s and certainly had the basic necessities and believe grocery shopping to be vastly underrated. Beyond that, life was grand and primarily spent outside and the limited mobility/relocation made for a grouping of close friends. We either walked or rode bikes with little or no concerns. Seems everyone knew everyone and despite that network we did our fair share of mischievousness.

Never dared to answer the phone -- grown ups only

I didn’t ever hear of a school getting shot up as a kid in the 70s.
I didn’t ever not once hear of another student committing suicide bc their social media told them they were not pretty, or popular enough.

Plus fishing without live scope was so much more satisfying but I digress…

Born in 52, grew up without A/C, most of our cars were what we would now call beaters that were bought cheap and used until they quit----rinse and repeat.

Most of my free time was spent outdoors from morning until dark and when I came up we didn't have "Helicopter Parenting" and spent a lot of time wandering the neighborhood and beyond without any way to get in touch with us.

I grew up in the Lower 9th Ward and it was nothing for me to be down in Arabi just about any day of the week 2 miles from home hanging with friends.

Walking, running and bicycles were my modes of transportation and it was nothing for my mom to give me $.25 to catch buses to go to my grandma's house in the 4200 block of Magazine St. once every 2-3 weeks as a kid.

I had real friends to associate with, not a bunch of on-line strangers who play the same video game that kids today call friends. I'd go to their houses and knew their moms and dads and sometimes be invited to eat lunch with them when it was time for their kids to eat.

Yeah, things are different today and I'm glad I grew up in the era I did and wouldn't change it for the world.

This was a dumb thread by me. I was just asking for a bunch of old guys to reminisce about their childhood.

My bad, just FYI everyone thinks life was better when they were a kid. That wasn’t the point of this thread, none of you old fricks grew up without electricity, cars, or phones.

Anyone that wants to go back to mechanical distributors has lost their minds. Tune-up? What's a tune-up? Most modern cars will never need such a thing. Plugs on a decently designed engine will last most if not the entire life of the engine. Then you had distributors on the back of engines like the infinite wisdom of GM and Mopar, at least Ford put them where you could easily get to them. Don't forget you have to measure dwell with a strobe. Carburetors and mechanical distributors needed to die in a fire and fortunately did. Rejetting a carb on a hot engine between trips down the track because the DA was different than last week was a PITA, now the computer does it and even if you want to overide the computer a couple of minutes with the laptop and you are good to go.

We used to have gun racks in our pickup trucks and would drive to school and around town with rifles and shotguns in plain sight. No one thought anything about it, including policemen and the folks in charge of the schools. It was just normal, I assume for all rural towns. No crimes were being committed and no break ins to take our guns. Most all of my friends were frequent hunters. Not sure if this was a routine practice in urban towns in the 60s and 70s.

It wasn't too long ago that the only naked woman a man probably saw was his wife. When did "girly" magazines start? The 40s?

Grew up in the 70’s- early 80s. No tech, no video games, barely a TV and spent every minute doing something, anything, to not be inside. That’s why today there isn’t a thing I can’t do. If I can’t do it, it can’t be done. If I can’t fix it, it can’t be fixed.

Sure it was. That is why US Citizens died in two European wars that didn't involve us and were just fine with an FBI Director who was appointed for life who did not believe there was a limit to his power, amongst other things.

There are probably a few other things you could throw in there.

It really was. There was just enough tech to enjoy things like renting movies and basic video game consoles but still that wild and untethered living that our parents experienced.

Add to this:
*memorizing 15 - 20 phones phone numbers
*having meaningful things to say to each other at the end of the day,
because you weren't constantly commenting on all things throughout the
day
*meeting and having to talk to girls/ women in person
