I’m obsessed with whale poop: ‘It can be neon green, bright red – or even sparkle’ It may be colorful but if it gets on your clothes you have to throw them away, You’re never going to wash it out. says biologist Dr Joe Roman, who can’t get enough of the stuff

quote:

There were gallons of poop in that water. It looked like red floating bricks. The smell was overwhelming. Some whale poop smells like brine and seawater, but with right whales, there’s a strong smell of sulphur.

quote:

Ambergris, which is formed in the hindgut of sperm whales when they digest squid beaks, is rare and extremely valuable. Since the 1970s, its trade has been restricted in many countries. But in the past, it was used to make perfumes, which were worn by Elizabeth I, Charles I and Casanova.

quote:

Whale faecal plumes can be neon green or bright red. At times, they sparkle with silver scales, like the sun glinting on the water. Every whale defecation is unique.

As for the smell, the poop of right whales is the strongest and foulest but I love the smell now.

A baby whale asks his dad one day, "where do I come from, Dad?"

He responds, "From my penis, of course."

"Oh, thank you" the baby whale says.

Dad replies, "you're whale cum son"

Whale shite ain’t worth shite, but Ambergris is literally worth its weight in gold.

quote:

The value of ambergris, also known as "whale vomit", can vary depending on its quality, size, and age, but it can be worth millions of dollars:

Per kilogram: The price of ambergris can range from $120,000 to over $4 million per kilogram.

Per lump: The value of a large chunk of ambergris can be in the millions of dollars. For example, in 2021, a group of fishermen found a 280-pound lump of ambergris in the ocean and estimated it to be worth around $1.5 million.

Ambergris is valuable because it's rare, forming in the digestive systems of only about 5% of sperm whales. The substance's value has been driven by mystery and uncertain provenance for centuries. People didn't know where it came from, and there were many stories about it.
