Pan Am Flight 759 was a regularly scheduled domestic passenger flight from Miami to San Diego, with en route stops in New Orleans and Las Vegas.
On July 9, 1982, the Boeing 727 flying this route crashed in the New Orleans suburb of Kenner after being forced down by a microburst shortly after takeoff. All 145 on board and 8 people on the ground were killed.
The crash had the highest number of aviation fatalities in 1982.

Paging 777Tiger. He's the resident expert on that tragedy. I believe I recall he said was present at the airport that day.
I have relatives in that neighborhood where it crashed. They were a block over but just awful.
Terrible day.

Joe Iverstine was a professor at SLU. He and his wife were taking their first trip alone after adopting their first child.
RIP Dr Iverstine.

A prominent Nola oil and gas operator was headed to Vegas on that flight. He was supposedly carrying $100k in cash. Dont know if it was ever recovered.

I had a family of close friends one block away from the crash on Fairway, and another friend's father's accounting office (in their former home) had a trench dug along the side of the house from the wing. The accounting office was fully staffed and open and the house was spared.
I lived about 2 miles away.
On the day of the crash I was interviewing for a job at Godfathers' Pizza on Veterans Blvd. I rode my bike to the interview. During the time I was inside a huge thunderstorm came through. After I got the job I went out front, the storm had passed, and a news helicopter was hovering right overhead, above the parking lot, broadcasting the smoldering crash scene from as close as they were allowed to be.
That was a very crazy day.

In one of the destroyed houses, a 16-month-old baby girl was discovered in a crib covered with debris that protected her from the flames, sustaining only minor burns.[5] The child's mother and 4-year-old sister were killed.
I met her years later at LSU, super nice, obviously she didn't remember any of it.

Correct. He was in line to take off. The doomed plane was 2 spots ahead of him.

I was in school during this time and a handful of us picked $10k in stock and were tracking it for the year. I went all in on Pan Am. Was just a kid but learned a valuable lesson.

I went to high school with a guy whose parent's were on that flight. I just remember thinking it didn't make sense that someone my age could lose both parents.
Later I dated a girl and her father was on the rescue/recovery team there. He said that it was just a horrible scene.

I've seen some of the unpublished photos from the ground after the crash.
Pretty horrifying. Lots of visible body parts among the debris. Although everyone on the plane died, it is a miracle so few on the ground did.
My aunt was a nurse at the time and got called in for expected influx of patients. Not many came, she said. People were either spared or dead.

had a friend that lived near crash site, two houses down from her was an obliterated house. Pieces and parts all over their back yard. I worked a few blocks away that summer and the day in happened - surreal.
