April 10 (UPI) -- The Department of Interior on Thursday released an analysis of fossil fuel deposits showing an additional 1.30 billion barrels of oil in the Gulf of Mexico's (America's) Outer Continental shelf.

According to the Interior Department, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management analysis shows "an estimated 7.04 billion barrels of oil equivalent" under the water.

"This new data confirms what we've known all along -- America is sitting on a treasure trove of energy, and under President Trump's leadership, we're unlocking it," Interior Secretary Doug Burgham said in a statement.

Burgham touted ramping up oil and gas drilling in coastal areas.

In 2023, 32 oil companies bid $309 million for Gulf drilling rights.

Chevron, alone, accounted for $104 million of that

The Interior Department said Burgham has directed BOEM to move forward with offshore oil and gas drilling.

It's a marked contrast to the Biden administration approach of prohibiting new oil drilling along the U.S. Atlantic and Pacific coasts, as well as in the Gulf.

Biden said in January that drilling off these coasts "could cause irreversible damage to places we hold dear and is unnecessary to meet the nation's energy needs."

He added that the climate crisis continues to threaten communities across the U.S. and what's need is to transition to a clean energy economy.

As the Trump administration pushes more fossil fuel production from the Gulf, the Interior Department Thursday also said it's tossing a requirement to prepare environmental impact statements for approximately 3,244 oil and gas leases covering 3.5 million acres in seven western states.

The DOI needs to get with the times and simply say Gulf of America rather than Gulf of Mexico (America).

edit... The DOI does, indeed, say GoA... whoever penned the article made a crappy, inaccurate editorial decision.

quote:

WASHINGTON – Today, the Department of the Interior announced the disbursement of approximately $353.6 million in energy revenues to the four Gulf of America oil- and gas-producing states – Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, and their coastal political subdivisions such as counties and parishes.

Since 2009 when Interior began disbursing funds, $2.35 billion has been shared with the states and their coastal political subdivisions. The funds, disbursed annually, are generated from offshore oil and gas production and support coastal protection, restoration, and infrastructure projects. The Gulf of America is a critical resource in ensuring that America can become Energy Dominant and meet demands through domestic sources.

On average, 58 percent of oil production on federal lands and waters comes from the Gulf of America.

Journalism is shite these days. Couldn't even make sure they spelled the Interior Secretary's name correctly.

Some media outlets have decided to roll with Gulf of America. Other, like this one, have not, which is why I had to add it in parenthesis.

Only negative with Gulf of America is GOM as an acronym seemed to roll off the tongue easier, but being the patriot that I am, I've just had to learn to give the extra effort for GOA.

I’m pretty sure the more we research oil, the more evidence we find that oil is replenished/generated by the earth naturally

It will always be the Gulf of Mexico. The world knows this and will operate as such. Downvote away. I like them.

It's a cool gesture unless of course you need to track stats and your damn category has changed from GOM to GOA. frick all that.
