I can totally relate. Wish they gave out medicine so loosely back in the day. Just had to suck it up and deal with it back then. Wasn’t until my late 30’s with kids that I was treated for anxiety, the shite actually works!!

I hope she never plans on having a job where she has to give presentations.

Friend lets call her kalunda balunga.(no pics)
She is meeting with the professor because she doesn't believe she should have to give a presentation/speech for communication class/oral communications since she has social anxiety.
Is this a legit thing? Is this a millennial thing?
That's a major reason for forcing college students to take that course.

Most people in speech classes would rather do anything other than give a speech. I think everyone gets some type of "anxiety" before giving speeches to their class, but it's part of the fricking class. You suck it up, do it or don't and fail.

frick that. I felt the same way, I'd still do it. My pits would you be soaked by the end of it.

I remember one girl in my public speaking class who shook the entire time with tears rolling down her face when was at the front of the class giving a speech.
Every time.
When she held any paper, like an outline, it rattled so loudly I could never even hear her (I sat in the front row about 3 feet away).
It broke my heart. It was stressful for me to just witness her struggle like that each week. :(

I’d fail her. Or tell her to drop. I’m not going to alter my class because of one a-hole.

A speech course was a requirement in my major. On the first day the instructor read this old Seinfeld quote
So true. Most people don't really like public speaking. I've got a bit of a reserved personality, I don't generally like being the focus of attention so I dreaded the course. We had to give several different speeches of around 10 minutes on different topics and of different speech types (informative, persuasive).
It's nerve-wracking but that's life. Tell your friend to nut up and get over it. At some point beyond college, she'll have to speak to strangers or even colleagues in a presentation setting. Better to practice in a classroom setting now than freak out when your job depends on it.

My wife has severe anxiety when it comes to presentations and speeches. She will hang out in a crowd no problem but being put on the spot destroys her. Otherwise she is a damn good employee and coworker.
Some people just can't handle public speaking.

When I have to speak in front of a large audience I use propranolol

Nothing. Might help her get over her anxiety.

if anxiety is that bad how do they drive?
Posted on 1/10/18 at 7:58 pm to pioneerbasketball
frick that. I suffered from that shite most of my life. I had to deliver all my speeches and you know what? I learned how to deal with the anxiety and get passed it. That experience I gained has been extremely helpful for my career.

Public speaking class sucked
If anything it was upper-level courses that required major presentations that helped me conquer my fear more than anything else.

Fear of public speaking is definitely a real thing.
I understand the public speaking and most people don't like speaking in front of other people.
My friend was trying to get a note from her doctor saying that she has social anxiety. After reading this thread, I see others talking about having anxiety so maybe its legit

Without a doubt. It a crutch and excuse that is way too overused.

If you are a communications major, you need to be able to communicate.
Posted on 1/11/18 at 7:12 am to kywildcatfanone
Tell her to pop a Xanax and get to talking. That is what half of my speech class did in college.

In today's world, I'm sure it is. Buncha weak bitches growing up these days. (And if you're offended by me calling you a weak bitch, I don't give a shite.)

frick her right up the arse. I have social anxiety and got up there to do speeches anyway when I was required to take that in college along with group presentations in other classes. It’s something to be worked around, not a goddamn crutch to get you out of stuff
This. Social Anxiety is very real and it’s a pain in the arse to deal with, but the fact is that you HAVE to deal with it. I don’t like to speak to people - even on the phone - much less speak in front of a group, but it’s part of life. In college, I was forced to do a group project in Sociology class. While I took charge behind the scenes on the actual work, I was letting someone else in the group do the presentation part in front of the large class, but they were botching the shite out of it. Since my grade depended on these dumbasses, I stepped in right in the middle of their speech and took over the speaking role. Nailed it and we got an A. Hated every second of it, but you can’t shield yourself from life.
