re: Is there a glut of urgent care centers? Seems they are in nearly every shopping center

They did me a solid and removed a massive ball of wax in my left ear a few weeks ago. Only time I’ve ever been to one. Five stars.

Texas, home of Super Strip Malls, feeder roads and Urgent Cares/Emergency Rooms with 3rd World medical care aplenty!

Anything involving chest tightness or your heart is going to catch you a ride to the hospital
Except it’s a mostly free country. You have the right to refuse that ride if you are oriented to time, person, place, and what’s currently happening. Being kept from driving in such a case is a legal issue. I’ve been in the medical and public safety profession for 37 years. Total violation of rights.

Sometimes it can take a week or better to get into my GP.
You need a better PCP

That happened to my dad once at the dentist. He went in for a root canal, they took his heart rate and discovered he was in AFib, and staff called an ambulance. He refused to leave insisting he wanted his root canal done. He finally gave in ?
OTOH I went in for eye surgery last year and I was so anxious my BP was 180/100. I figured they would cancel and send me to the ER but they gave zero fricks. The procedure went on as scheduled.

They’re great for getting physicals done and to get a prescription when you have something like a sinus infection. I called them when I got bit by a copperhead and they told me that I should go to the ER but that sort of makes sense.

Not like there are Mattress Firm Directs

They’re being used by the doctors down here in Florida for anything other than a scheduled checkup. If you wake up and you’re not feeling good, have a fever, if you call your primary care physician here, they will tell you to go to an urgent care. Do not come to the office.

It beats the hell out of going to the emergency room. It’s especially convenient with primary care doctors not having appointments available.
This. If you want ED wait times and costs to go down you should relish more urgent cares.

I can’t even find a pcp. They’re all nurse practitioners which isn’t necessarily bad but I do wonder now how much value they provide over AI for routine things

Some are better than others and some will actually do X-rays and other useful things. But a lot of them are trash and have no real services. They exist only to take your money before sending you to an ER.
If you need anything more than a bandage or z-pack they can't help and they simply charge you $150 for nothing and then send you to the ER. It's a racket.
Teledoc is much better than urgent care in my experience.

HB1s are hard workers who are the only ones willing to the job at the rates those places pay. They have my respect and appreciation.

Majority do not scam. They do the jobs that Americans don't want. These places wouldn't keep them employed very long if they aren't qualified.

Everywhere. St Francis built a really nice one down the road. Never opened it. Just sits there. Guess when you don't pay property taxes you can afford to let things rot.

Hb1 also create a more a competitive market which increases productivity and decreases costs for everyone.

Ochsner gets shite on a lot, but with them you can find available wait times and schedule an appointment at their urgent cares so you’re not sitting in a waiting room for several hours
My local hospital, Lady of the Sea operates an after hours clinic 5 till 9 pm on week days and 9 to 3 on weekends. No appointment necessary and I pay what a doctor visit costs.
Best deal in medicine. I went one day for an upper butt crack cyst. They were going to drain it, but it wasn’t “ripe enough” to squeeze. They gave me some antibiotics and it went away on its own. I was the only one there so service was quick.

Lack of availability is not an indicator of of quality, low cost, effective and efficient healthcare. It leads to higher out of patient costs with frequent trips to urgent cares and ED and it leads to higher out of pocket OTC costs.

If you literally value the opinion of AI when it comes to medical care over one of a nurse practitioner, PCP, just ask its opinion. AI is not even close to a substitute for the quality of care that an FNP can provide
quote:
Short answer: A nurse practitioner (NP) or primary care physician (PCP) brings massive additional value over Copilot or any AI for routine medical care — not because AI can’t explain conditions or interpret guidelines, but because NPs/PCPs can examine you, diagnose you legally, order tests, interpret physical findings, prescribe medications, manage chronic disease, and intervene when something is actually wrong. AI cannot do any of those things.
