JPMorgan Chase CEO Dimon derides pushback to return to office, demands efficiency

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon scorned calls from some employees to soften the bank's five-day return-to-office policy in an animated town hall meeting on Wednesday, according to a recording reviewed by Reuters.
quote:
Employees at the largest U.S. bank have complained on internal message boards and chats about losing hybrid working arrangements, and one group launched an online petition urging Dimon to reconsider.
When asked about the in-person work policy during the staff meeting, he said: "Don't waste time on it. I don't care how many people sign that (expletive) petition," he said, drawing some laughter.
quote:
Instead, Dimon demanded more efficiency and stressed employees have a choice whether to work at JPMorgan. The CEO told them not to be mad at him, and said it was a free country.
The rollback of remote working policies has prompted groans from some workers as COVID lockdowns receded. JPMorgan's call for more workers to come back brought a deluge of complaints, many from back-office workers.
Some employees sought advice from the Communications Workers of America on how they might set up a labor union, a rare thing in the U.S. finance sector, CWA campaign lead Nick Wiener said.
quote:
In-office requirements will not be left up to managers, Dimon said.
"There is no chance that I will leave it up to managers," he said. "Zero chance. The abuse that took place is extraordinary."
Dimon's view is shared by many Wall Street leaders and President Donald Trump, who demanded the end of remote work arrangements in the federal government. Several other Columbus employers, including AEP, Huntington Bank and state government have recently said they will require workers to come to the office more.

I can’t imagine how less productive people are working from home. I know what I’d be doing without supervision. TV and playing golf. Glad the Gov and these big companies are going back to some normalcy.

when someone says entitlements can never be taken back...we now know otherwise.

I have been full remote since 2 years before Covid, and have never had issues with productivity and WFH - my manager has never had issue with it either.
and yes - I do get more work done at home than in office - but i am also a responsible adult and take my job seriously

Career development working from home is worse than a child’s development when home schooled.
GET BACK TO WORK!
GET BACK TO WORK!

Beyond the real estate piece, there is a real business issue with training and setting expectations with young employees when huge chunks of your workforce are remote. The whole thing worked great during Covid because that was not an issue yet.
People always say “I get more done at home.” That may be true (probably isn’t for most), but even if it is, the organization as a whole is not going to be as sustainable.

Dimon has asked all of the bank's departments to show 10% gains in efficiency, which would entail 10% cuts in reports, meetings, documents and training sessions
quote:
The bank is working to keep headcount flat, and "we continue to invest in hiring new professionals where appropriate and currently have 14,000 open positions," a company spokesperson said in a statement.
Interesting to see if those 14,000 positions get filled when the rally cry is "we expect 10% more output, in the office, for no additional pay"

For my job, you either are producing work or you aren’t. Whether you are working in the office or mars the results will either be there or it won’t when the deadlines come

If someone wasn’t productive WFH why weren’t they fired or forced back into the office sooner? This whole thing is very confusing to me. Sounds like they are shite at management and they are blaming WFH.

Dimon is just mad that he wasted all that money on shiny expensive office space and none of his minions give a frick about it enough to sit in it while they make him money.

What about all the people who work from home because they own there own business? I work from home, and I know many accountants, lawyers, handymen, etc... who all work from home.
Why do so many morons think it's impossible to work from home?

I mean... my wife does get more work done at home than she does at the office. She's on a hybrid schedule of 3 at the office and 2 at home as a post producer for commercials.
When she's at home everything is a phone call or an email that is straight to the point. It's rare anything gets done late on those days.
At the office she is stuck having to coddle clients who don't need to be there and jackass creatives who burn all fricking day micromanaging everything just so they can pat themselves on the back and say they were involved. If a creative rolls up for an edit session she can be almost assured it's going to run over time and then she gets to juggle the cascading effect it has on every other project that is now starting later.
You know what doesn't happen you're working from home? Some shithead standing over your editor asking him to move the font a quarter of a centimeter to the left or right for 6 hours for a fricking Metro PCS pop up commercial for websites that's going to run all of two weeks.

I take solace in the fact that any WFH job will be first up to be automated. Enjoy your free time now, chumps.

Also, everyone saying "i know what i would be doing, golf and TV if i was working from home"
Not everyone is as lazy as you and needs someone to watch over them like a 2nd grader. You are the ones ruining it for people. And when everyone is back in the office and you claim "finally, back to normalcy" just know... everyone you work with hates you.
