Drove without a license plate to West Texas for 10 days to catch rattlesnakes. Traded in the Vette for a new Bronco a month ago in Mississippi (I live in La.), and they don’t give temporary tags. In my short time there, I was pulled over 3 times and on another occasion was followed by Border Patrol for 10 miles until I reached the Customs/Border Patrol checkpoint station.
On every occasion the officers were super polite. When I told them why I was there, they asked how our trip was going, what we caught that day, etc. - very pleasant conversations. On the first stop the officer said he had to give me a citation because there was no record of registration, but when my paperwork comes in just call the judge’s personal number and send everything in and the ticket will be erased.
Complete opposite of every La. cop I’ve dealt with in the past 15 years (and my father was career NOPD). The towns we were in were mostly border towns, and I legitimately appreciate how thoroughly (and cordially) these men are doing their jobs.
Are all Texas cops that nice?

They're so nice there they won't even bother you while you shoot up a school

It’s been a while but that was my experience with a DPS officer. I got a ticket but the guy couldn’t have been nicer or more professional about it.

Last time I was stopped by a LSP trooper:
Him: How's it going today?
Me: Alright.
Him: The day's not over yet.

I got pulled over by THP west of Beaumont and knew I wasn't speeding. Officer walked up introduced himself and told me I had a license plate bulb burnt out and he couldn't read it. At the same time his eyes were looking all over the inside of my truck. I asked him with a laugh if he really pulled me over for just a burnt bulb. He laughed and said, oh yeah we have to keep all of our vehicles safe in Texas. And then, Sorry to hold you up, just get it fixed when you get back home.
No ticket, no written warning, obviously, I wasn't the guy he was looking for that night.

Got stopped by Texas State coming home from Wyoming a couple years ago for doing 87 in a 75. He didn't write me a ticket and asked me to slow it down some.

There are useless speed traps on I-45 just south of Dallas, and in little towns occasionally, but I've never been treated poorly by TX cops (Sheriffs, State Troopers, etc.) On the border, randos in new vehicles with no plates are probably a boredom stop/follow.
Why one dude on I-45 thought he needed to dump the round from my chamber and put it on the bumper until he left was odd. Long time ago (10+ years,) and it's only happened once. On the negative side, the amount of people I see driving at dusk/night with no lights on (I-10) that don't get pulled over concerns me a bit, but then someone gets to clean up the remains of the motorcyclists, etc. later, not my problem.

I've done the rattlesnake roundup tour a couple of times .... but with good tags.
There's some great restaurants and peopke along the trail.
I started feeling sorry for the rattlers though.

On balance, yes. However, I would rather not have a need to tangle with one.

if you were towing 3-4 cars you would not have been stopped once

I got pulled over 3 times in Baton Rouge because I bought my car in Mississippi and had no license Plate, no registration,
and no inspection sticker.
Each time I showed the officer my paperwork that I had just purchased the car and I was on my way.

La cop - “How we doing today?”
Citizen - “Good, sir.”
La cop - “Do I make you nervous?”

Something similar happened to me.
I was driving in a rented Nissan Altima on a state highway in west Texas, driving from Carlsbad NM to El Paso. I had just crossed the border into Texas and was pulled over quickly by Highway Patrol who was actually in front of me. He saw me coming up, I was going maybe 5 over, no way fast enough for him to know I was speeding. He slowed up immediately, got over and came in behind me.
Pulled me over, realized I was on a hiking trip and let me go quickly with nothing.
Obvious fishing by him seeing an Altima driving out there.
