Working south of San Antonio we drove rental trucks that often had out of state plates, and would get pulled over regularly by state police. I’d explain it was a rental and I was there working and they were always nice and never gave me a ticket.

Harris County Sheriff is the only one that has bothered me in Tx. I got a ticket for running a stop sign that I absolutely completely stopped at, because I saw the cop sitting there. Another time, I was pulled over at night on the way home from work and grilled about drinking, and asked if I had guns, drugs, or bodies in the truck and if he could search the vehicle. He didn’t find anything and I hadn’t been drinking and wasn’t speeding. I never got an answer as to why I was pulled over.

I got pulled over by THP west of Beaumont and knew I wasn't speeding. Officer walked up introduced himself and told me I had a license plate bulb burnt out and he couldn't read it. At the same time his eyes were looking all over the inside of my truck.

I have friends/family in law enforcement, and they’ve said that a burned out license plate light is the most common probable cause excuse for pulling a vehicle over, because so many of them have at least one of the bulbs out.

This is the sort of thing that seems like a funny self deprecating way to break tension during a traffic stop. No big deal.

But that sort of attitude seeps in to your daily life whether you realize it or not. And while the cop likely stops dozens of people a day, hearing that does not put the person driving at ease.

Drove without a license plate to West Texas for 10 days to catch rattlesnakes. Traded in the Vette for a new Bronco a month ago in Mississippi (I live in La.), and they don’t give temporary tags. In my short time there, I was pulled over 3 times and on another occasion was followed by Border Patrol for 10 miles until I reached the Customs/Border Patrol checkpoint station.
On every occasion the officers were super polite. When I told them why I was there, they asked how our trip was going, what we caught that day, etc. - very pleasant conversations. On the first stop the officer said he had to give me a citation because there was no record of registration, but when my paperwork comes in just call the judge’s personal number and send everything in and the ticket will be erased.
Complete opposite of every La. cop I’ve dealt with in the past 15 years (and my father was career NOPD). The towns we were in were mostly border towns, and I legitimately appreciate how thoroughly (and cordially) these men are doing their jobs.
Are all Texas cops that nice?

Texas is the goat state and its not close.

My keys fell out of my pocket last Saturday in Fort Worth. Someone brought them to the car park attendant station. They also left me a note telling me they found my keys and brought them downstairs for me with Enjoy Texas on the note.

Good people.

Dad, Ive seen your posts in the past.
Do you do any of the rattlesnake rodeos in the spring?
As a kid, we did Okeene OK, Freer Tx, Sweetwater TX and Opp Al for easterns and pygmys.
Fond memories of fried rattlesnake and those rattlesnake Queens.

Nah.

I've been pulled over for speeding by Highway Patrol. Refused a search (they had no reason), had to wait for a dog, then they didn't find anything. I left with a warning. fricking losers.

I have found that most Texas law enforcement personnel are pretty professional and have a good sense of humor.

My last interaction with a Louisiana trooper was very similar. Quite professional. I had turned onto a state highway and was doing what I thought was the speed limit when I got pulled over. I gave an honest answer when he asked how fast I thought I was going. He asked where I had entered that highway and I told him. He grinned saying that he knew the speed limit sign was down from there and that he was only advising me of the correct speed limit. We spent a few moments discussing motorcycles and wished each other a great day.

I saw a speed limit sign a few more miles down the road and he was right, I had been speeding. Was nice to be given a break by someone who was trying to be fundamentally fair.

I've done the rattlesnake roundup tour a couple of times .... but with good tags. There's some great restaurants and peopke along the trail. I started feeling sorry for the rattlers though

Yeah, I’ve never been interested in that type of event. We find stuff, handle it for a few minutes and take pics, then release them where we found them (unharmed).
