My in laws live in a nice subdivision that was being built at the time they moved in. After a year demand dropped a bit and the developer had trouble selling lots. DR Horton came in, purchased the lots, threw up shitty homes and absolutely ranked the value of the nice homes that were built by local contractors with high end features.

By chance this wasn’t the neighborhood off Bayou Tortue Rd in Broussard was it?

You can't have quality when any reputable builder with good subs can't even build the house(before profit) for what they are selling you the house for with the lot and paying a real estate commission.

About 10 years ago we looked at a neighborhood in the BR burbs and the exact same thing happened but it was DSLD. The original homes were custom built but DSLD purchased the remaining lots and values tanked. All of the privately owned lots were for sale.

They probably used Chynese dry wall. Apparently it will mold.

I had a DSLD house with the same issues. I had to eat 3k at closing because of it. Didn’t care, was happy that was all the buyers wanted.

And LP leaders let these criminals build Subdivision after Subdivision in the Parish.

Mind-boggling

All the DSLD homes in my area withstood Laura pretty easily.

Ida too here in Ascension Parish. The poster who mentioned the cheap fixtures and such nailed it.
The structures are fine. But we have some cheap arse lights, faucets, paint, trim, cabinets, etc.

That said I'm very happy with our DSLD home 3 years in now.
The volume they do also allows them to absorb all closing costs.
That alone saved us $6k and was a deal-maker for a poor fricker like me.

Uncle is a builder as well. He says the guts of a DR Horton are fine and up to code

I inspected a few DR homes after the hurricanes in SWLA. They put interior sheetrock under the vented soffit as a fire retardant.

For one, they make a sheetrock product just for this purpose. DR wasn't using it and also if you do this you still have to make sure the house has proper airflow into the attic. These didn't as the soffit vent was 100% blocked. The ridge vents aren't going to do much to cool an attic and keep moisture out without soffit ventilation introducing airflow.

No doubt those houses will have major issues moving forward. Sadly DR has an out with future issues due to the hurricanes.

Also, the soffit overhang was 6". The little bit of sheetrock they put on the soffit isn't doing much to slow down a fire. I would rather have the airflow and not worry about the sheetrock causing moisture to rot out my rafter tails.

Morganfield?

There are still some nice custom areas in Morganfield that DR is not allowed to touch. Someone is building about a $5 million dollar mansion in one part of Morganfield. The last lot in that part is for sale right now for $250K.

I feel for these homeowners but Louisiana’s New Home Warranty Act is stern.

I assume it protects the builder over the buyer?
