License Plate scanners on police cars

One of the people who works for me told last night about how she was stopped last night while driving her husband's car. She wasn't involved in a moving violation and she had insurance but the cop said he was behind her and saw that her registration had expired at the end of September.
I said, how could they tell at night since the tags on the LP no longer have the month on one side and the year on the other.? I said the guy must have eagle eyes.
No, she said the police officer said he had his scanner on and was passing by when it came across. I wasn't aware of this in Louisiana. So I called a friend in the StTammany Sherrif's office to find out and he verified that in fact they do have them. The Sherriff doesn't particularly like to use them, but he said the local PDs are using them a lot now and raking in money

They must not make license plate scanners for temp tags.

If you are ever headed west on 12, just as you get into EBR, the SO usually has two or three unmarked units sitting there - ostensibly as “drug interdiction,” but really as civil asset forfeiture thieves - but check out the front of their rides: looks like the sensor turret on an Apache.
And that is all they do, Monday through Thursday - let the plate readers collect and sift it through various databases.

If it says "24" on the registration sticker on the license plate, it's very likely that they didn't get their registration sticker put on or they didn't actually renew. The year is almost over and most drivers should have "25" or "26" year tags. If the cop followed briefly and saw that it wasn't a "DEC 24" tag he had the probable cause to pull over and issue a ticket for the parish $$$.
FWIW, plate readers are super great for finding stolen cars. Major intersections in cities have them and alert local PD that the car is nearby. Cops having them help track them down faster. This was great for us on several occasions when I worked at a car rental facility. As soon as they got on the hot sheet, we usually had about 7 days max until the vehicle was found.

They got some high tech shite on the front of that dude. Guy parks completely perpendicular with traffic scanning all them big arse trucks.
I flip his arse off every time I pass them.

Every black camera you see with a solar panel is a license plate scanner. They just harvest driving data and violate your rights every day. Cops have them live all day and drive around to collect the data too.

I hope no bratty kid with a Benjamin pump starts creating havoc.

Funny thing, one of their common things to do is to cruise through parking lots, especially during things like church services, running tags.

What “rights” are they violating? Just curious. If you say privacy, that right is being violated every time you’re on your phone or computer. They are harvesting your information constantly. That should be a crime.

I'm good as long as they don't develop break tag scanners

IANAL, but to conduct a stop of someone, you need probable cause. I don’t know if the LEOs use the Terry decision as an excuse for license plate readers (in some typically leftie way of pretzel like justification.)

Which is hilarious, when you consider that, increasingly, criminals will just steal your car to do crimes because license plate scanners exist. They reasonably get a free hour or so to joyride and do their dirt before they have to ditch the vehicle because, eventually, it gets reported stolen.

“drug interdiction,”
The police love to cloak their civil rights violations as Drug Interdiction.

If he ran her plate and found the registration was expired, that is probable cause for a stop.

It's funny though, I was at lunch and started to pay attention. If she was the outlier, there are plenty of outliers out there.
It just seems chicken shite.....like the cop was bored or something
But like others have suggested, maybe Mandeville needs some money.

Doesn't work on those with Texas license plates with no insurance either.
