LSU CATS hold—How strict are they with 2 in a row? My son…

He’s behind by 2 business classes, so they put a hold on him. He can’t schedule 2 of his classes for this semester. The classes aren’t business classes though (his major), so it doesn’t make sense to me??
So he has to appeal to the business college to lift the hold before he can schedule. He had to do this last semester too because he was behind by one class. (I’m just finding this out, of course.)
I lit into him and told him to CATCH UP. He said he doesn’t want to take business calculus with accounting, Econ 2010, and a finance class (i can’t remember which finance it is). The other 2 classes he needs to schedule are required humanities. He wants to take business calculus this summer. So he is being difficult, but he said he will fail it if he takes it with those other business classes. (He got a D last semester & used his exemption.)
So now I’m worried they will kick him out of the business college. Are they really this strict about being behind? Do they no longer allow kids to take an extra semester?
During his first year while walking to his car in tigerland he was jumped from behind by 3 strangers (we eventually figured out who one was. he was 23 and had a hard cast on at the time). My son ended up with a concussion and a broken jaw on both sides and had his jaw wired shut for a month, so that set him back a little.
But a hold was not put on him that semester. So i suppose that excuse won’t help him….
But do they really kick you out of your senior college if you want to take an extra semester? Do they really expect students to change their entire majors at 20 years old if they’re behind by a couple of classes? I don’t see how that helps in any way. Nor does it help not letting students complete their schedules so they end up starting classes LATE. Neither of these tactics help the students do better.
Why not let him finish in business a semester late then let the world deal with him? Some employers might not like the way it looks whet he’s applying for jobs. Let him learn the hard way….

Good to see a scheduling thread around here. Feels like we’re back in 2010. We don’t have college students anymore.

If you’re son is a senior in college;
I suggest you let him figure it out.

Honestly I’d contact the dean or equivalent that handles this stuff and ask them directly. Even if they are fairly strict it shows that a parent is on his arse. I know college kids are adults but it’s good when parents are still involved helping not be frickups IMO, and if I was in the position to make the call that may sway me to be more lenient for the time being.
And obviously make sure he continues to improve and catch up. College kids are adults but they’re also stupid sometimes and need help.

Stop providing for him, he will schedule all the classes he needs. It's called life.

Did he change majors? I took business calc my first semester. I didn't realize you could get into the business college without taking that.
IIRC you needed 30 hours of credits with a couple of pre-requisites to get admitted into the CoB. Before that you are just a business major (business track) that hasn't left UCFY or whatever the regular school is.

Calling to persuade the college that your kid needs special treatment is Exhibit A what is wrong with everything.

Math 1431 is required to be admitted to the business college, similar to how Math 1550, 1552, and 2090 are required for admittance to the college of engineering (EE in my experience).
If your son is saying he's in the college of business without first taking Math 1431 (business calc) as well as Econ 2010, he is flat out lying to you.

I’m not saying try to persuade anybody. I’m saying he could get a better answer by calling them. And it would show them that a parent is involved (which could be a benefit).
I’m very specifically not saying that he needs to try to handle it and “fix” anything for the kid. Just that he could learn the answer and get something more definitive.

I never understood how this could be an issue. It’s soooooo easy to figure out what classes you need to graduate. When I was at lsu there was a flow chart, an online system (can’t remember name) that made it even easier than the flow chart, and a counselor. It’s not hard at all

Not too late for him to enroll into BRCC this semester and learn a trade (perhaps an easier one).
If your son can't figure out how to navigate what courses are needed to progress through school correctly, I don't think "business' is the correct field for him.
He should also stay away from "Communications" too. As he sure as hell couldn't figure out how to do that on his own either...

Your kid is dumb.

Imagine getting taken aside for a serious conversation with your dad and he leads off with "son, I've been talking to some people from Tigerdroppings.com...'

Hey! The rigors of university are tough. 5, 1- hour classes, 3 times a week. Sprinkle in a couple of 3-hour labs that week.
How’s his son supposed to get high and jerk off other dudes with his mouth in that limited amount of time?
