You don't call retarded people retarded, that would be offensive.
You call your friends retards when they're doing something retarded.

You know that. I know that... but some people seriously get their tickles on second hand offense.

As an insult it’s a great word but it’s not a nice thing to hear as a parent of a disabled person

Why? Real question.
If a person isn't disparaging your child...just simply uttering the insult to a third party, then why is it offensive or not nice to hear?
Does anyone speak to or within earshot of your progeny with 'retard'? Directed towards your child? If not, why does it bother you?

I have no clue who this is..
68 now, but one of the most recognizable teen stars of the late 60's/early 70's. Every teen boy wanted her, but she never was able to turn that fame into a big, A list, career.
She became a yuge drug addict for a while.
You wouldn't have liked her. She is a blond and has a vag.

For a second I thought they were talking about another word with a hard R.
When did the word “retard” become unspeakable in any context?

It's been awhile... Probably second only to the dreaded and deadly Nword.
They're trying to kill 'Spaz' too.

Love the hypocrisy. Respect and Inclusion! Unless of course your opinion is different than mine.

Here's what wiki says... seems accurate.
quote:
Retard was previously used as a medical term. The verb "to retard" means 'to delay or hold back', and so "retard" became known as a medical term in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to describe children with intellectual disabilities, or retarded mental development.[5]
For context, until the 1960s, the terms moron, idiot, cretin, and imbecile were all genuine, non-offensive terms used, including by psychiatrists, to refer to people with mental intellectual disabilities and low intelligence. These words were discontinued in that form when concerns arose that they had developed negative meanings, with "retard" and "retarded" replacing them.[6][7] After that, the terms "handicapped" (United States) and "disabled" (United Kingdom) replaced "retard" and "retarded". Disabled is now considered a more polite term than handicapped in the United States as well. This trend was dubbed a "euphemism treadmill" by Steven Pinker.[8]
Except wiki is slow... disabled has again morphed, now it is "challenged " or "differently abled". Actually, slow is a word too... another poster mentioned 'afflicted'.. or short bus, derp, plenty other words.

I think the context of the word matters. Growing up if your friends did something stupid we would call them retarded. I never witnessed anyone call someone with mental disabilities retarded.
I guess i’m older than you, because in my day, that was the accepted word for developmentally disabled. Like, it was the nicest word. But if it’s considered a slur i won’t say it. It’s just interesting how the word for it keeps changing but eventually ends up a “bad word” and they have to find a new word.

This is all well and good but where we have gotten as a society. We can't use certain words that are correct because some people use them words in a mean or hateful way and others are too damn sensitive that even when the words are used in the right context they get bent out of shape.
Posted on 4/11/25 at 5:48 am to Rick9Plus
And when it changes the new word will be offensive to some other group somewhere.
But it's ok to be offended. Just know that that's a YOU problem. To expect the rest of the world to bend and adjust language so that YOU don't feel bad is probably the most narcissistic thing I've ever heard of.

Not to mention the ever evolving vocabulary that if you're not up to date with, you'll be ridiculed.
One of my favorites: Homeless > Unhoused > Individuals experiencing homelessness...
A funny one.. what the heck is the real difference between a colored person vs a person of color?

I have never heard a retarded person say that the word retarded is offensive. This is typical white liberal behavior thinking they can define for the world what is and isn’t offensive and acceptable.
