Mardi Gras Beads - Question for riders
Posted on 1/5/15 at 1:31 pm

To those who have ridden in a parade before…
I'm riding in a parade for the first time this year, and am wondering how many beads I need to buy. I am riding in one of the Uptown route parades if that helps.

Depends on the parade, but probably a lot more than you are expecting.

So far I have 15 gross, and plan to buy at least a couple more cases and other throws.

go for quantity over quality. You'll be too drunk to know what you're throwing anyway.

In a 5 mile parade I use to ride with 100 gross of 33s, 30 gross of 48s and 150 footballs.
Plus some other stuff.

That has been the plan from the start.

You need at least 100 gross if you want to throw constantly.
Depends on if you are on the top or on the bottom.
On the bottom, you can interact more with people. So, shots, stuffed animals, etc can fill any deficiencies in total bead count.

Six cases of the basics and three dozen specialty necklaces.

I buy the hand sized fake leather footballs that you can freaking launch. Always fun to point out and make eye contact with a random bro 30 yards away in the crowd and see if you can make it rain. Trust me, when a pass and catch is made you and random bro share a moment

AGREED. PEOPLE LET THE JUNK FALL TO THE GROUND. THAt's no fun. You want to interact with people.
Buy long, thick beads and throw fewer of them.

ETA: I spent about $2k this year. I order with a group of 8 so we get a decent discount. Plus, we ordered a ton of heart themed stuff last year for this year. We ride on V-Day. Hail Endymion!

It will vary from parade to parade the amount of beads you will need to buy. If you are on the bottom of a double decker, I recommend you get some boas. That is all that anyone wanted last year, so I bought more of those this year and will be cutting back on the amount of beads. I was just chunking beads by the handful at the end of the route last year.
I probably spent in the $1,700 range last year for all my throws for my first year, and am trying to cut that down to the $1,200-$1,400 range this year.

Typically spend about $1500 and quality is much better than quantity. Unless your throwing 33" beads as a twelve pack they are probably going to hit the ground. To me you always need to make eye contact with the person you are throwing to; nobody likes to get hit upside the head.

I agree with this.
I don't buy anything less than 48". I think my bulk bead that I threw last year was 48" 12mm. I believe I had 22 cases (10 dozen per case) of those, and then a few cases each of other specialty and larger beads.

i'm on the bottom front of a second unit toward the end...buying a bunch of 18mm x 48 and some krewe speciality items...

I ride in Thoth. I throw a lot. Over the past few years, I have noticed that people are less enamored with beads. Toys, trinkets and cool objects are the way to go. Something big, you can tease for half a block is a must.
Also, the pneumatic twist confetti cannons are a hit during a stop.
trust me, if buying beads, limit the small stuff. Only going to piss you off when people ignore the throw. Save that stuff for canal ST.
THis year I will be riding with 20-25 gross of specialty beads and about 80-100 dozen non bead items.
