Six news organizations sued the State of Louisiana on Wednesday (July 31) in an attempt to strike down the state’s new law that makes it a criminal offense to knowingly or intentionally come within 25 feet of a working police officer after being ordered or asked to step back.

Gov. Jeff Landry signed Act 259 into law in May. Violators could be fined up to $500, face up two months in prison or both.

The news organizations say the law would prevent journalists from covering aspects of stories essential to the public’s right to know, such as being so far away that they can’t observe or film officers interacting with protesters or record audio of newsworthy events where officers are present.

When will our legislature address the real issues? Do the Ten Commandments bill next. A bunch of fluff nonsense that doesn't improve the lives of our citizens.

I'm not for or against this law, but this is stupid. 25ft is not that far and with technology these days, they absolutely have the capability to see and hear from that distance.

Trimming the government bloat should be priority number 1. But that'll never happen.

I’m sure there will be NO issues in enforcing this law. 25 feet is nothing.

If a cop is already pissed off at you for being near him he ain’t gonna just let it go because you kept an 8 yard distance.

Sign of the times as long as they don’t abuse it. If they abuse it, make sure there are like kind penalties.

It’s a stupid law that likely won’t hold up in court. At the end of the day, it will only end up wasting tax dollars.

I have mixed feelings about the law, but I think it's revealing that everyone trying to downplay its effects chooses to quote the distance in yards, and rounded-down yards at that.

Yeah, when you say "8 yards" it doesn't sound like a lot. You don't want it to sound like a lot.

I think it kind of is a lot. I like a nice buffer when I work, but 25 feet crosses the line into "respect the delicate genius" territory. Something more like 10 feet would make the law more legitimate in my opinion.

Yeah, I'd just say it isn't even half the distance from the pitching rubber to home plate.

10’ is nothing. Thats 3 steps from an aggressor being able to take advantage of an officer that turns their back while dealing with someone else. Not really much point in a buffer zone law if its that close to begin with.

They're welcome to take a job where they don't get to point guns at people and lock them up if that's a problem.
