25 feet
I mean shite, that’s basically the distance from the base line to the top of the key in basketball. That’s not exactly preventing them from filming or doing their news stories. Any closer and it seems like they’d literally be interfering.

Prosecuting this law is going to be pretty damn difficult. You can tell from body camera if someone is fairly close, but if someone is 22 feet away it’s gonna be hard to prove that they weren’t 25 feet or more away.
It’s not like cops are going to have a tape measure holstered as well.
I suspect the reason they didn’t make it 10 feet, is because they will likely only be able to successfully prosecute people at or within the 10 foot mark.

It will hold up and is reasonable to protect officer’s while they are engaged with perps or investigations. 21 foot rule has been around for a long time and is considered minimum possible distance for an officer to unholster and fire upon an attacker who is closing distance to attack. 21 feet can be closed in 1.5 seconds roughly.

So will there be an exact measurement? What if I am technically 25.5 feet away and asked to step back? In other words how will a policeman know if someone is exactly 25'?
So if this goes to court the police would have to provide evidence someone was 25' or closer.
What if a cop sees someone he doesn't like is in the area. The cop moves closer and is "working" closer than 25', he then tells that person to step back. That person's reaction is stepping forward to make sure he heard him correctly, at the point he can arrest that person? This sounds like some bullshite.

Wouldn't that be an easy way of breaking up any protest?
Walk up tell the people to get back. Rinse and repeat until they are gone or arrested.

F this cop nonsense, just a sh*t law for them to abuse.

It’s a crazy rule.

When will our legislature address the real issues?
This is a real safety issue. Gangs of people with cell phones crowd around officers when they’re arresting a person of a particular color

Makes sense. We should always give our famously honest cops more room for any kind of deniability.

I can promise you that if they don’t want you around, 25 feet is going to be whatever they want it to be.

I knew an Oklahoma highway patrol officer who arrested a little local ad newspaper reporter for refusing to get off the hood of a wrecked vehicle while they were still trying to get the driver out.
The case eventually ended up with my friend the cop being fined $10,000 by the court and out of pocket for a lot of the legal costs.
Crazy!

It’s unconstitutional. First amendment auditors are gonna have a field day.

I can imagine my attorney arguing that I was 26 ft away and bringing in forensic distance experts to get me acquitted.

Yeah, let’s make the job even more unappealing so that we only get stupid, power-trippy, or otherwise unemployable people being our enforcers of the law.

Do the Ten Commandments bill next. A bunch of fluff nonsense that doesn't improve the lives of our citizens.
I am sending my kid to Catholic school because I want them to learn this stuff. It pisses me off that we are going to be wasting tax money on legal fees when all the lawsuits come in. Grandstanding and a complete waste of money and time.

Moving Louisiana forward one great law at a time! Really making a difference. Amazing.

25’ isn’t that far
It really isn't. I don't have a problem with police not wanting to be crowded when they are trying to make an arrest. Especially in the ghettos where they make most of their arrests.

The media doesn't want to report the news, they want to create it. You don't have to be in the officers way to report it.
