Moving TO Baton Rouge

If you knew someone in a city the size of BR, or larger what sales pitch would you give them to consider moving to Baton Rouge? Before the obvious ones come out:
LSU Sports: Let's face it, the football team is going to be mediocre for some time. And people moving here may not give a crap about LSU sports. If you've never lived outside of La (and most BR residents have not) you'll realize that not as many people care.
Food: What food? Boiled crawfish? People aren't moving here for boiled crawfish.
Weather: It's either raining, about to rain, or has just finished raining. The ground is soaking wet 200 days a year. We all know about the humidity and insects. This is not an outdoor lover's paradise.
Hunting: If you like to hunt you don't need to live in BR
Cost of Living: Once you have kids to educate, homes and bodies to insure, and cars to insure you realize how unaffordable BR can be.
Schools: A mess in every city, so a moot point. We don't beat any other cities in this area, but we may lose to some suburbs.
Economic Opportunity: If you're a doctor, lawyer or in petrochemical field then maybe. Otherwise where are the opportunities for career advancement? BR isn't littered with office parks full of Fortune 2000 companies.
Travel Hub: BTR airport is destined to be a small regional player forever. As MSY continues to grow it only becomes more useful to travelers. Plus, you're 3+hours to the nearest beach and a full day of driving until you get to mountains.
Not trying to dump on BR (although it clearly looks like I am) but I'm honestly wondering how to you sell someone on the decision to willfully live in this city?

there's really no reason to live in baton rouge other than family. that said, if you can make a good income it's not a terrible place to live.

Baton Rouge is an absolute shithole and just re-elected the most dysfunctional and incompetent mayor it has ever had.
Posted on 12/6/20 at 10:53 am to remax_joe
We have a black female mayor who’s going to make BRGA.

I don't like Broome but how many cities this size or larger have conservative Republican mayors?

If you’re in the petrochemical industry, most of the plants are in ascension or iberville.
I know very few people that work in plants and live in BR. The engineering firms are in BR and they employ a lot of people but if working remotely remains a thing, I could easily see those people moving outside the parish for access to better schools, better neighborhoods, and less murder

These kinds of threads always have too many generalizations. Where would you rather live: U-Club, or some homeless camp in Denver?
Point is, not all parts of a city or state are created equal. Yes, most of BR is rough, but there are some nice pockets and suburbs, and if I were a realtor here I would accentuate those positives. The trim packages of the newer houses here put most of those in other states to shame. There’s a lot of good people here, a lot of families with deep roots. Also, the whites in the BR area are not afflicted with the self hating SJW plague, although a realtor would need to word that very carefully

I would never recommend living long term in Baton Rouge to anyone who was not from the area. Baton Rouge has a very cliquey culture that is difficult for outsiders (people who did not grow up here or at least go to LSU) to easily penetrate and become ensconced in without having local connected friends get them in. Baton Rouge is a pretty easy place to live if you make enough money to afford to live close to work and send your kids fo private schools. It has a decent number of restaurants, New Orleans is close by for every major concert and dining option imaginable. It’s a place that can get old after a while, but can be comfortable, like a familiar videogame where you know all the cheat codes and secrets. It has relatively mild winters and is close to excellent fishing and decent hunting locations. BR has solid parks, stellar libraries, and excellent public water quality.
With that said, it lacks significant advantages over regional peers as well as substantial geographical advantages of other areas. It’s lacking in economic diversity as well as mobility. It’s just not a place that makes sense for non-lifers.

Not sure when or what St George could do other than make the area a little safer and have better schools. Both of those things would be huge. BR would turn more into the worst parts of Chicago & Detroit though. Not sure if I'd want that next door.
So, other than LSU sports, and that's not enough, there's nothing about BR that'd be worth staying here for if you're able to leave.
And our summer weather is way too long and absolutely oppressive. If your AC goes out, it's unlivable.

I was really close to my grandfather and my wife's job used to be tied to the area. He's dead now and my wife changed careers a decade ago.
Tbh we don't have much keeping us here anymore. Our youngest is in the 8th grade but she wants to move.

You sound miserable. But to answer your question I wouldn't recommend anyone move there unless they have family there. I miss it. But I miss the people, not the place. Proximity to great fishing is one thing I guess. Its a good place if you're young, single, and like to party with sloots. And idk why you shite on the food bc the food is far better than most places in this country. Other than that, I'm with you

And it may get worse quickly. Rumors I heard, I don't like to spread them, so I won't. Look at LSU, tuition is through the roof, if you don't have TOPS would you want to pay that tuition cost for that product? Petro chem industry: ITEP was monkeyed with by gov, Smack Smack, look around and see the effects of that. BR's future doesn't look to bright, we may fall behind Alexandria, La. .
