new phone from AT&T arrives. I didn't order. . .

AT&T is the only service provider that works at my place of employment. I have an old galaxy that makes me happy.
I got an email a few days ago that said my new phone was on the way! Real official looking with a link to a tracking number. It smelled like a run-of-the-mill phishing scam, and I ignored.
Then, last night, a new phone arrived at my home address. Previous billing address was my place of business, now for many many years on auto pay.
Trying to get clarity from AT&T online or by phone is impossible. The AI assistant on line cannot help you unless you give an order number, which I do not have. The automated phone system did the same thing, hanging up on me when I was unable to give an order number. There is no option to speak with a human being.
My online account at AT&T does not have any unusual charges, nor reference to having been given a free phone.
No unexpected charges on our personal credit card, though I will have to check my business card bill when it comes. It is on that card that I pay my monthly bill using autopay
I perfectly happy with my phone. I have no interest in upgrading
Is this is a third-party scam of some kind? Whadaya think?

They did this to my Uncle who had a phone that they could no longer support on the network. They eventually just mailed him a free phone

It’s a Russian hacking trick

Same thing happened at our business. We have an old guy that works in the warehouse with a company phone. Old as shite flip phone. We received a brand new phone with his number on the box this week. We didn't order it but I assume his phone may be on the 3G network that is soon ending and this new phone is compatible with 4G/5G. We are just holding on to the new one until the old one quits working.

It's probably because your phone will not accept phone calls once they shut down the 3g network. I got one randomly a couple months ago

Doesn't matter. They'll charge you for it and you'll spend the next 4 years talking to everyone who works for that God-forsaken shithole of a company and still have no resolution.
frick AT&T.

AT&T full 3G turnoff is weeks away.
Also, be advised that AT&T may switch you to the new SIM (phone) at any time.

The information on why you just got a free phone sent to you
This does not count as an account upgrade and doesn't obligate you to resign any 2 year commitments. Basically they either had to give you a phone or stop charging you for service after Feb when they cut you off.

It may mean someone stole your identity. That’s what happened to me a year and a half ago. Got a random new iPhone in the mail one day from T-Mobile. Never ordered that. Ended up getting other things as well. Someone had created a bunch of credit cards in my name and opened accounts all over, and bought random bullshite. They even ended up going to the post office and getting our mail forwarded to some random vacant house across town. It was a giant pain to get it straightened out and I had to freeze my credit at all of the agencies and whatnot.
Seriously, look into all of that. The first thing that happened was I randomly got a new phone.

AT&T will go to 5G on Feb 22. It has sent free lower end phones to its customers who still use 3 G phones with advice to activate before 2-22 to avoid loss of service.

I have a galaxy S7. According to this site, it should still be supported. Nevertheless, this is probably the root of the problem, and I will keep investigating and report

They're just getting everyone up to date on 5G.
A phone is much cheaper than finding a new customer.

First, log into your account and see what's going on. You can always use the chat feature to talk to a CS rep who should be able to tell you what's going on.

Mother in Law got a new one because her old one was 3G, and that goes away this month.

Source for this? I can't find out any information on when Lafayette and Baton Rouge will get 5G+

I rarely have issues with ATT customer service. They get about a 9/10 for me. Had my U-verse box break on me at 7pm on Friday before opening week of college football. New one arrived hand delivered by 10am the next morning. I offered the dude a beer, money, and a biscuit for being clutch. His reply was man I'm just glad to make you happy.

Same thing happened to me. I bought an unlocked Google Pixel phone and on our account, it shows my phone as not supported for 4G. They sent a generic looking smartphone that worked for a week and now won't turn on.
My Pixel stopped working randomly one day. I had to call AT&T from my work phone and the guy I was speaking to said that my phone didn't support 4G(which it clearly does) and mentioned there was nothing he could do. He then asked where I bought it and I told him from Google.com. He was like "Ok then...power off your phone for 5 minutes and power it back on." Wouldn't you know, it started working again.
