Rouses Market opened a new grocery in the middle of the Freret Street restaurant row, and this one adds its own restaurant to the popular Uptown stretch too.

Freret Faire is the name of the in-house restaurant, where the menu by chef Christy Engeran has salads, sandwiches, breakfast dishes and a focus on lighter and vegetarian dishes (there's a meatless gumbo z'herbes, for instance, and a version of grillades and grits made with braised mushroom ragu).

The cafe also has its own bar, so shoppers can duck in for a beer, a wine or a mixed drink. That addition quickly stirred memories of the old Schwegmann's grocery stores, which in their day had in-house bars called Shopper's Bars for this very pursuit.

The new grocery is smaller than conventional supermarkets and has a focus on grab-and-go and prepared dishes. It also showcases many local vendors and small food entrepreneurs from around the region.

As soon as they start to sell Zebcos there, I'm gonna go "shopping" again.

It's been decades.

Do you remember when that was a drugstore? Maybe CVS? They used to get liquor delivered on Wednesday. At the time, they still put a price sticker on the bottle. The stock girl saw Tequila and marked all the Tequila at the same price. Bottles of Cuervo same price as Torado. Hit them every Wednesday night!

It's crazy how different that neighborhood is now than what it was 10 years ago.

I love hearing the old timers tell stories about how shopping their used to be. In addition to getting damn near anything needed back then, the old men would be up near the bar drinking high balls while their old ladies made groceries.

Pre-Katrina the end of Valence Street was crack central. Yea, gentrification sucks.

I actually did the graphics for that place and the parking lot is insanely small. It fits about ten cars for an entire market. It’s gonna be a nightmare to park.

Most shoppers there will be on foot. The entire neighborhood around there is much, much improved.

Very much so. Only thing missing is a high end restaurant. Magazine has many of those.
