After the NHL Seattle franchise teased the long-awaited announcement on Wednesday, fans finally know what the team’s nickname is.
The 32nd franchise came to life on Thursday in a 9:00 a.m. livestreamed press conference. Check out the exclusive announcement below.

Speculation began nearly 20 months ago when the franchise was officially awarded in December 2018. Since then, rumors about the name have run rampant.
While fans seem to cling to nicknames like Sockeyes and Steelheads, there’s a huge push to unleash the Kraken in the Emerald City.
The Seattle ownership group officially registered Totems, Emerald, Rainiers, Renegades, Sea Lions, Seals, Evergreens, Whales, Cougars, Eagles and Firebirds to a list of 13 potential names for the city’s expansion team.
The Kraken will play in a remodeled Key Arena, now known as Climate Pledge Arena, which is set to open in October 2021. The team’s first NHL season will follow.
Fans have long awaited the opportunity to bring an NHL team to the Emerald City for some time. On March 1 2018, Seattle ownership launched a season ticket drive that surpassed the NHL’s season ticket goal of 10,000 in just 12 minutes, and so far, the NHL to Seattle movement has 40,000 depositors on the waiting list.
It’s been nearly 100 years since the collapse of the Seattle Metropolitans, the first US-based team to win a Stanley Cup in 1917. The Seattle Totems, the city’s professional ice hockey team from 1944-1975, won three championships in the Central Hockey League, but fell apart after acquiring a substantial amount of debt.
Now, the Seattle Kraken will get an opportunity of its own to once again bring the Stanley Cup back to the the Puget Sound.

Let no joyful voice be heard! Let no man look up to the sky with hope! And let this day be cursed by we who ready to wake...the Kraken!

This is what I had to do to figure what the hell that is. I'm probably the only one, but just in case I'm not the only dumbass, here you go...
quote:
The kraken (/'kr??k?n/)[1] is a legendary cephalopod-like sea monster of gigantic size in Scandinavian folklore. According to the Norse sagas, the kraken dwells off the coasts of Norway and Greenland and terrorizes nearby sailors. Authors over the years have postulated that the legend may have originated from sightings of giant squids that may grow to 13–15 meters (40–50 feet) in length. The sheer size and fearsome appearance attributed to the kraken have made it a common ocean-dwelling monster in various fictional works. The kraken has been the focus of many superstitious sailors passing the North Atlantic and especially sailors from the Nordic countries due to their proximity and its Scandinavian origin. Throughout the centuries the kraken has been a staple part of sailors' superstitions and mythos being heavily linked to sailors' ability of telling a tall tale.

So, it has nothing to do with Seattle.

The world’s largest octopus literally lives in the Puget Sound.

So they're culturally appropriating?
I hope Seattle's wokeness ruins this for them.

This is a city where the Nordic influence has long been great, from chowder merchant Ivar Haglund to the Nordstrom family’s world-class retail empire to the twin political powerhouses of U.S. Senators Henry “Scoop” Jackson and Warren G. “Maggie” Magnuson, who for decades used their clout to get the federal funding for the bills that supported many of the city’s improvements.
The Scandinavian migration has been a strong fiber in Seattle’s tapestry. A testament to the strength of that history is the opening in May of the new Nordic Museum in Ballard, a $45 million relocation and expansion that is bringing a very contemporary look to old country traditions

Cool name and has been the fan favorite since day one. Glad it worked out.

Kraken is technically of Scandinavian folklore and there is a massive Scandanavian population in Seattle.
