I like going through the Mobile Tunnel except for the traffic. At least the Harvey Tunnel is back open.

Why does Mobile need to have the highest bridge in the land? 62 feet higher than one in NOLA.

Container ships are getting larger and larger. Probably trying to accommodate future growth. I know savannah is in the process of raising its current bridge height with plans to either build a higher bridge or a tunnel in the future.

The GNO bridge is @170 ft high depending on the height of the River.

And we are still waiting for a new bridge in BR

We already have a new bridge. The newer bridge would be called the newest bridge and Ben McDonald can try to explain to whoever he is doing the baseball game why it is called the newest bridge

The road way at 215 feet above the river will make it the highest in the United states.

The suspension bridge that crosses the river upstream from there (leaving "africatown") already sketches me out.

Golden gate says 220 ft but there’s many more much higher, where did this highest bridge come from?

That bridge in baytown has to be taller that that.

Huh? There are at least a couple of dozen bridges in the U.S. higher than that. Start with the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado and the New River Gorge Bridge in WV, both 800 or 900 feet above the respective rivers. Golden Gate Bridge SF? Verrazano Narrows in NY. Etc, etc.

They're not talking about the top of the structure. They're talking about the height of the roadway.

I talked to a state engineer about the project while back. The state wants to have the highest bridge in the country to stick its chest out. I figured the golden gate bridge was the tallest..

The new bridge will be taller than the Skyway in Tampa also anything in Texas. There are higher bridges over canyons and rivers out west. But as far as clearance over a waterway from the bottom of the road deck to the waterline this will be the highest

..edit...O yeah the plan is to build a bicycle and walking path along side of the outside lanes...Who the hell is going to ride their bicycle 215 ft on a bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge has a water clearance of 220' (total height of 746', being I've seen a couple of people argue that on this thread) and has absolute fricktons of pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

This is Alabama. This project will take at least 15 years, whenever it does actually begin.

Neither was I. The Golden Gate Bridge roadway is 220 feet above the water. The Verrazano Narrows Bridge deck is 228 feet above the water. There are many more that have their decks WAY higher above the water than that. I’m not criticizing the planned bridge, but referring to it ultimately being the highest bridge deck in the U.S. above the body of water it spans is demonstrably wrong. (Examples: Royal Gorge Bridge, New River Gorge Bridge, Tillman Colorado River Bridge, 959 feet, 900 feet, and 700 feet from bridge deck to the water they cross.)

And that won’t change. Louisiana is a politically corrupt place. There’s a reason Alabama is ahead of us, and able to build a new bridge. It pains me as someone who loves Louisiana to admit this.

The BR loop and the new LC bridge would be well on their way if LA citizens weren't so insanely stupid about tolls.

Fun fact there are now only two road tunnels in Louisiana. Harvey and Houma. Belle Chase is being removed or filled in as they build the new Belle Chase Toll Bridge. South Bound traffic now crosses the bridge instead of the Tunnel. Just a few more months before the entire project is completed and the bitching about the toll will begin once you start paying to cross.

In terms of projects, while the bridge is needed, it didn’t seem like a mega project that needed to have a toll especially when toll revenue will only pay about half the project and the other half is federal grants. Then you also have the squeaky wheels that are going to complain about the .25 cents to cross for Plaquemines Parish residents. 1.10 for Geaux Passes, and 2.20 for toll by plate. With a maximum toll of 8.43 for 18 wheelers. The rates will increase over time by the CPI.

Heck the Leeville is now at 5.40 and 18 wheelers 21.90 without a Geaux Pass. It started at 3 dollars.

Will there be parking on the bridge for someone to get out?

Here’s some food for thought.

Being a NELA baw, I don’t take the tunnels, period. Ever.

The Africatown bridge is the ticket.

According to Waze, it’s a 24 minute drive from the start of the I10 tunnel up and across the Afticatown bridge and back down to I10.

3.7 billion to save some people 24 minutes and there’s already 2 access points albeit tunnels through the bay.

There’s fortunes to be made in road construction fellas.

So the USS Alabama can sail upriver to defend Montgomery.

In all seriousness, probably so the ships from Austal have enough clearance.
