I know in a lot of the weather threads, there is discussion about the crappy radar coverage in Baton Rouge. Supposedly that will fix this issue.

However, the local weather office will be without a radar for about 3 months during the move, and will depend on neighboring offices, and the radar at MSY, for coverage.

Overall I'm guessing this will be a good thing.

or...they could build the new radar site in Hammond and they bring it online and deactivate Slidell.

so instead of 3 months, you would be without radar coverage for...say...60 seconds?

Good.

Honestly I think Hammond is too far east. But it never made sense why Mississippi had so much radar coverage and Louisiana didn't.

Or keep the one in Slidell and open one a new one somewhere between Baton Rouge and Lafayette. But I guess they couldn't find money for that in the $1 trillion infrastructure bill.

South Louisiana had huge radar coverage gaps. The Hammond move should alleviate that.

This should, in theory, result in far more reliable "radar-indicated" warnings in the Baton Rouge metro. They were basically blind below 4,000 feet in the LSU area.

Anyone know WHERE in Hammond it's moving?

perfectly placed right in the peak of hurricane season

don't want to wait for... say... a November-January window where severe weather is limited to do this?

If its anything like Slidell, it'll be next to the airport.

Article says it's moving "at the end of 2022" so I assume it's in a November - January or close window.

Yeah, that is what they are saying... should be able to get down to about 500 feet now.

I'm guessing this is resource related. I know after Laura they said that aren't any radars just laying around unused... every one has to be assembled from scratch using spare parts. Something about that model is no longer available and they want as many of the same model as they can get.

So I guess the plan is to disassemble this one, truck to hammond, then reassemble it.

Agree,

Thibodaux should have been a possible second location.

Think about it is closer to the Gulf of Mexico and could provide better coverage over the Gulf.

There probably isn't an entire new WSR-88D NEXRAD radar for them to do that. If I remember correctly, getting parts for them is difficult and building an entirely new one is hard to do given the difficulty in getting parts. That's why it took so long to fix the NEXRAD radar site in Lake Charles after Laura and the site in San Juan, Puerto Rico after Maria.

Aren’t there two weather stations BR can pickup on? It’s at a certain frequency 162.4 MHz I think so there’s no other station that could ever reach that high it’s only for the governments use. Right during peak hurricane season what a shitty time to do this.

Did you read the article? This is literally the third sentence: At the end of 2022, the radar will be moving west to Hammond, LA. End of 2022. Not during hurricane season. Jesus.

I'd choose either Donaldsonville, Thibodeaux, Plaquemine, Rosedale, or Grosse Tete for a new site. But since they are moving the one from Slidell to Hammond, Breaux Bridge might be a better spot for a new one.

Lafayette would then be covered by both Lake Charles and Breaux Bridge.

I just assumed that SE La would ha e great coverage. I think it’s good up in NW La.
