Today is the anniversary of my grandfather's death. I never met the man he died before I was born unfortunately.
I built this model for my mother whose father worked at the Consolidated Aircraft plant which was near the Uno campus now here in New Orleans building PBY Catalinas. Today's offering is a 1:48 scale Monogram PBY5 of VP-11 based in Papua New Guinea 1943.

The black cats mission was completely different from the normal pby patrol/sub hunter they actively went out at night to terrorize the Japanese convoys.

When my dad first moved to South Florida from Arkansas in the 50s, there was a charter company that flew PBYs over to the Bahamas and back.

Nice! I built that old Monogram a long time ago. It’s long gone. I did however build the 1/72 scale Academy kit a year or two ago.

Great airplane, the one that would get you home.

My dad was rescued by a "Dumbo" flight on Christmas Day 1944. He was shot down in the Pacific.

A friend of mine has compiled extensive information on these aircraft.

Holy frick! 1/48 Catalina is a big ol bird!

Thanks for sharing.

I haven’t had the balls to do one in 1/72 yet.

What a plane. I’ve always loved the floats.

You guys who can do these museum-quality model builds amaze me. I don’t have the patience to build one right and every model I've ever built ended up with super-glue fingerprints on it.

Not the same plane, but my Mom’s 1st cousin was killed piloting a PBM Mariner on a training mission during WWII.
Sadly, the accident report blames crew inexperience for the crash. The crew were all just out of basic flight school and there were no experienced pilots on board.
