Olympic legend Mary Lou Retton ‘fighting for her life’ in ICU: daughter

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — Olympic gold medalist and West Virginia native Mary Lou Retton is in an intensive care unit and “fighting for her life” as she battles pneumonia.
According to a *spotfund set up by her daughter, McKenna Kelley, Retton has been in the ICU for “over a week now” and has not been able to breathe on her own. Kelley said that out of respect for her mother’s privacy, she would not disclose any more details, but she did say that Retton is uninsured.
“Please consider helping our family out,” Kelley wrote in an Instagram story. “And most importantly please continue to pray.”
Retton, a Fairmont native, made history as a gymnast particularly during the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles when she received two perfect 10 scores in the floor and vault categories just weeks after receiving an operation on her knee.
In that same Olympics, Retton became the first American in history to win all-around gold for gymnastics and also won two silver medals and two bronze medals, earning more than any other participant that year.
She is considered one of West Virginia’s most famous athletes of all time and has a road and park named after her in her hometown of Fairmont.
McKenna Kelley, for those who don't know, is a former LSU gymnast. Strange that MLR would be uninsured. She gives the impression of being fairly well off.

When will people start admitting the clot shot destroys your immune system and your ability to fight against infections. Lots of rare medical issues are now happening. You know who else gets rare infections? … HIV / AIDS people because their immune system is trashed

America went nuts and was as proud as we could be when she pulled that off in LA '84. Those summer games were an awesome arse kicking in so many ways.

I really hope she recovers. I know she was divorced in 2018, but it seems odd that she wouldn't have health insurance.

‘The impression she’s well off’ ? That’s like 95% of the OT, but we all know that reality rarely overlaps with what people post on social media sites like Tigerdroppings and Facebook .

I always felt that one was pretty watered down, iirc, USSR boycotted as did some other communist bloc countries, and judges, I didn't think the best athletes in the world were there and they were a little too liberal with 10s, maybe it's just me

I remember it well.. she was the ‘It’ girl, and no one else came close. ..if you would have told us South La kids back then that one day her kid would wind up being a gymnast at LSU, we would have all said ‘No way !’.. yet i dont think it got much publicity at all, other than a few crowd shots of MLR during meets.. . i guess it’s because 1984 was so long ago .
