On this date (April 12) 1961, First Man into Space

No nation had ever flown a human into space until the Soviet Union did it on 12 April 1961. Yuri Gagarin’s one-orbit flight in his Vostok 1 spacecraft ushered in a new era of spaceflight and scored a key victory for the Soviets, who were locked in a struggle for technological and ideological supremacy with the United States.

The USSR started off far ahead of the US in the space race. Their first guy up orbited the earth. A month later the US sent our first guy up for a 15 minute suborbital flight. Then John Glenn orbited the earth 10 months after the Soviets. Safe to say we passed them though (nb4 this devolves into a moon conspiracy thread).

The shot heard worldwide. We were so embarrassed by them making it first the US had to fake things and pretend to go past the impassable Van Allen Radiation belts to the Backstage studio's fake Moons built in Area 51.!
We even had to pay Russia off not to expose that the US was flat-out lying by telling the whole world about whipping their Red Bolshevik Asses in the race to moon. Imagine how much it must have cost to buy them off to eat that much PR jackpot shite. Especially right in the middle of the Cold War!
Not to mention all the billions we had to pay the hundreds of thousands of Americans employed by the massive fake space industry to stay hush.
And most sadly, the blood on our hands for the ones the CIA killed as examples to the others of what happens if you rat the country out! A dark stain on the United States and an unforeseeable beginning the Commies all started.
Hmm, in hindsight, maybe Russia did it on purpose just to get a big payday!
ETA: Almost forgot. These greedy, lying politicians, going back for years now, including MAGA and that POS lying Elon Musk, have the gonads to pretend to go back and then on to Mars! What's next? to Infinity and beyond??????
ETA: It looks like the Moon Landing Denying Wing nuts are mad I headed them off at the pass, and they are downvoting me. Of course, none have enough nads to post why I am wrong. So it looks like I did the board a favor and saved it from their claptrap.

I recently rewatched Tom Hanks From The Earth To The Moon again. I forgot how good it was.

That series was excellent. Highly recommend it to anyone wanting to know the real and very interesting history of the space race.
Also, the movie The Right Stuff is all about Chuck Yeager breaking the speed barrier and the beginnings and accomplishments of the original Mercury 7 astronauts. It's an awesome watch. On my top ten all-time list.

One of my first memories was the space race.

And then the Soviet government had Gagarin killed because they learned he was going to deliver a speech criticizing the government.
—Oh comrade! Such foolishness.

QE II and Prince Phillip had him over to the Palace for Lunch 3 months after his space trip.
Yuri was 5’2”.
The first crop of Soviet Cosmonauts had a maximum height limitation of 5’7”.

They sent him on a worldwide propaganda tour, specifically because he had a gregarious personality and Hollywood smile. So much so, JFK, personally prohibited him from entering the U.S.
Evidently, he was a notorious booze hound as well, so somewhere along the line if any of that conspiracy was remotely true it would have become self-evident.
Looks as if he suffered the same fate as Goose.
quote:
In 2013, new evidence emerged thanks to the investigative work of Alexei Leonov, a former cosmonaut who was troubled by the death of his friend and fellow space traveler.
His (unconfirmed) explanation for the crash?
An error in air traffic control. During the fateful flight, a Soviet Su-15, a model much larger than the hero's MiG-15, violated Gagarin's airspace. The turbulence caused Gagarin to lose control and ultimately plunge to his death.
What Really Happened to Yuri Gagarin, the First Man in Space?

As soon as you give us all your opinion on whether the Moon landing was real or Fake. It's a simple, easy response. Hopefully, it's not too complicated for you... just let us know if it is, and we can talk you through it\
ETA: 2 hours and counting. We're waiting... remember, we're here to help!

Reading up on the history of the Space Race and it's surprising to find how divisive of a program it was in government in those early days. Even after the launch of Sputnik in 1957, Eisenhower had no desire to create a space program to compete with the Soviets. He considered such a program to be a gigantic waste of money. It was public pressure to respond, however, that finally caused him to relent and allow the creation of NASA.
