A tip from Crimestoppers resulted in Louisiana State Police recovering more than a dozen cars from an abandoned apartment complex in Algiers.
According to state police, a total of 16 cars were found stored at the Cypress Acres Apartments. State police said a tip came in on Nov. 22 regarding eight stolen vehicles at the complex.
David Darby of Texas was identified as a person of interest in the investigation. Several people were living in the abandoned apartments without permission from the property owner. On Nov. 22, detectives saw a Ford F-250 pickup truck with passenger Haley Smith, 41, of New Orleans, in the apartment complex.
A search warrant was executed on the property where Smith was staying. Detectives found two rifles, one 9mm handgun with an extended magazine, and other stolen property.
According to state police, Darby was also linked to the theft of a trailer and a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle. Detectives have not been able to find the car and trailer at this time, and are asking the public if they have information to email lsp.insurance.fraud.unit@la.gov.
State police said Darby faces two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, several counts of possession of stolen property, and one count of possession of a firearm with obliterated serial number.
Both Smith and Darby were booked into the Orleans Parish Jail. More charges are pending, according to state police.

How do people live in an abandoned apartment complex without the owner knowing?

Good police patrolling would have observed this at an abandoned apartment complex.

If you're going to borrow an apartment complex that doesn't belong to you, why not get the cars that go along with it. I bet they thought it would look less suspicious with a bunch of cars parked out front. "Must be new renters, derp"
Edit: Nevermind, those complexes are scary deserted and overgrown. Creepy.

The owner is probably some corporation or LLC located out of state

Check the google maps photos. Quite a bit of cars parked for an abandoned complex.

Government and or dumb investors build apartments in areas like this and allow anyone to move in. Residents do not pay rent and trash the buildings. Due to crime and safety, maintenance people refuse to go in apartments to repair the buildings. Buildings are abandoned. Criminals move in and set up chop shops, drug dealing and gang activity. Cops finally raid them and run them out. Bull Dozers come out and clear the land. Then rinse and repeat. I can only speculate that it was a gang of white supremacists……..

Not a chick, and has a long criminal record.

Were they just collecting stolen vehicles? What's the point? Holding on to 16 of them is just idiotic. Then again, we appear to be dealing with idiots.

Bankrupt landlord Joshua Bruno is trying to sell his Bentley for $53K on Facebook

Joshua Bruno, who operates five low-income apartment complexes in New Orleans where tenants complain of grim conditions, filed for bankruptcy Thursday on all of the properties, just as an Orleans Parish judge was poised to order a “keeper” to manage them pending foreclosure.

The properties are two large Algiers apartment complexes, Oakmont Apartments and Cypress Park Apartments, as well as Forest Park Apartments, Liberty Park Apartments and Washington Place Apartments on the east bank. Together they include more than 450 units, many of them housing government-subsidized tenants.

If state police executed the warrant and arrested this trash, does that mean the AG prosecutes?
These people cannot be rehabilitated. Look at the guy in Covington. After a while, these people need to be locked up permanently or made to meet their Maker.

Do they really need a search warrant if they’re living there illegally?

The city should take over all those complexes, round up the homeless in the city and move them there
