Busted lines? Go get a shark bite and put a band-aid on it.

I spoke to two plumbers I know and they have not stopped. They are telling people to get in line and they will get to them when they can. Same with A/C men from people overworking their heat pumps when temps dropped below 30 and people didn't switch to emergency heat.

Enlighten me. What's the difference between 'heat' and 'emergency heat'?

Should have been more specific. No busted lines, just need some work done.

typically on a heat pump, when you have it set to heat its running the compressor in heat pump mode. emergency heat will be electric heat strips installed on the air handler.

I once had a heat pump and the compressor ran even when heating.

I was told by an HVAC guy that "emergency" heat bypassed the compressor and just did the heat thing, or so the story goes.

This term applies to electric heat pump-style heaters which use an air conditioner in reverse to provide heat. Heat pumps are very efficient, but they don’t work well very cold weather. When you switch to “emergency heat” on a heat pump, it activates some additional heating elements to provide adequate heating during particularly cold weather. If you don’t do that, you run the risk of burning a heat pump up.

I never knew that about heat pumps. (I don't have a heat pump...just good old natural gas fueled central heat.)

Yeah. That’s how they work. The heat of compression supplies the heat to your home. YouTube how heat pumps works. Pretty neat.

By definition an heat pump uses the refrigeration to pump heat into the space. It reverses the normal flow cycle.

Problem with a heat pump is that it runs year round.

The emergency heat option is wait h an electric heat strip or gas furnace that kicks on when temp outside get low

Key points about using emergency heat: Extreme cold: When the outdoor temperature drops significantly below the point where your heat pump can effectively heat your home, typically around 30-35 degrees Fahrenheit.

Refrigeration cycle works when the temps in space and outside are not to far apart (20-30 degrees)

But if you want it 68 and it 10 outside you will need get a 58 degree swing with a heat pump. Hence the need to “emergency heat”
