Friend sent this to me
Marca.com

Marca claims that Pope Francis' net worth is valued at $16 million, despite the fact that he declined a salary. His net worth is determined by the office's resources and perks rather than individual income. The pontiff's institutional privileges included an official residence, five cars, and international travel plans at his disposal

Official privileges and perks don't factor into a real net worth calculation.
Those assets are property of the Roman Catholic Church.

So it's occupation-related, and he has no heir to pass the money on to if he could.
How is it considered to be a "net worth"?

I think that's a perversion of the term Net Worth.
I might believe that his total comp package was worth $16 million a year in travel, benefits, assistants, legal, accounting, and other services.
But none of that stuff was material goods that he owned under his name. So it's wrong to classify that under Net Worth.

I know this will offend many, but Catholicism makes me sick.

Well, he was no Franciscan then. Evidently, poverty wasn't his thing.
The Vatican, being only 1/8 the size of Central Park in NY, would be a challenge to keep the batteries up on those 5 cars.

Catholics are wealthy, but that is church wealth, not his.

But he was a Jesuit

Rather than living in the Papal Apartment he lived in basically a common dormitory with other priests.
You can dislike his politics all you want. But he put his money where his mouth was when it came to living his life for the poor.
