I'm ashamed of the hateful messages being posted in response to this news.

How fitting and wonderful that he was able to celebrate Easter mass for his last day on Earth. He's with our Lord in paradise now.

If he wasn’t turning 80 in June, absolutely.

RIP

We are in Passau, Germany.
The church bells have been ringing and we were in the beautiful Baroque cathedral for the last few minutes of a mass.
We thought it was a regular Easter Monday.
We didn’t find out until we walked out that the Pope had died.

We attended his Easter mass at the Vatican about 9 years ago

That must have be a unique experience.

I pray for him.

I know several Catholics who have protested this pope due to some of his statements on social issues. I think people found some of his positions to be hypocritical. While some of it appeared to be hypocritical, I also think there was a lot of half truth reporting which caused confusion.
I pray that some healing can take place.

At worst, he's in Purgatory.

RIP Your Eminence.

Not gonna celebrate the death of any human, but its time for the Vatican to move back to a Pope that steers the church back to its foundation. As one of thousands of Catholics that have left the church I would love to see it return to its roots.

His positions were consistent with the Gospels
I’m not sure what else he should do or be

He chose 111 of like the 120-130 voting members.

So odds of things ever going back to the way they were under a John Paul is slim.

I mean that’s huge. I’d imagine the next pope is likely to be more liberal than he.

I say this as an agnostic who has a lot of Catholics close to me (best friend my whole life and his large family + my wife’s family).

I think Catholics prefer the next pope to actually be catholic rather than someone who wants to reshape the church into what they’d like being Catholic to mean.

That’s what I’ve mostly gathered. From who I know personally, the biggest fans of this past pope were all non Catholics. That’s a problem.
