Proper way to store a generator?

I know, subtle “I got power” brag
What do I need to do to store it? I just filled it less than an hour before getting power restored (about 6 gallons in it).

Drain the gas, drain the oil.

Drain almost all the gas and then add some seafoam and run it till it runs completely out of gas, let it sit and crank it a few more time to burn the gas in the carburetor, let it sit for and repeat a few times , change the oil, the air filter , and go ahead and figure out what spark plug it uses and buy one of those too

Why would you drain the oil?

Also after I drained all the gas etc, I open the gas cap and let it sit in the bright sun for a while

I drain the gas then run the trufuel 4 cycle fuel in it till it runs out. usually a 1/2 of the can. Then I run that once a year with the 4 cycle trufuel. The container said its good for 4 years on the shelf or 2 years after you open the container. Been doing this for a few years and haven't had a problem on my stored 4 cycle equipment like my generator and pressure washer.
I have no idea if this is recommeded or not, it is just what I've done with sucess.

If there is ethanol run it out and drain the carb.
Leave cap off for a while so no varnish leaves a residue.
If it's real gas you can fill all the way up with gas and add stabil and its good for a year. Make sure there is no airspace again because of varnishing..
If it's electric start crank every three months to keep the starting batter charged up

Good advice to run it out of gas but you may still have problems if you don't get all the old gas out of the carb and bowl.
If you are going to store it dry without fuel you need to do whatever it takes to get the fuel out of the carb bowl. Sometimes there is a drain screw, sometimes you have to remove the whole carb.
Alternatively, storing it full of no ethanol fuel with stabilizer and starting it every month or so also will work but most don't remember to do that and it sits for years full of fuel and it causes problems later.
I store mine dry and remove the carb to drain all of the fuel. I also change the oil and mark it with a sticker for the date before I put it away in the shed.

I just ran the gas out until a friend in Houston told me that the pros with rental generators added Seafoam when the gas was almost gone. I have been doing that now for several years. Once I got lazy and skipped the Seafoam then took a while to start next time we needed it.

So you can forget to fill it next time you use it and burn it up, duh.

Drain the tank from the petcock or run it until it runs out of gas. Don't leave gas in the carburetor fuel bowl so drain it by using the drain screw or taking the carb bowl off. Change the oil. You can change the spark plug if you want, it's cheap enough. I change it depending on how many hours are on it. Your good to go.

Drain tank. Run until completely dry drain oil. Store for eight years until you use it again.

This is the answer. $8/bottle on amazon, but should be able to find in local stores. Generators are simple engines with no oil filter etc. They need a little extra care if you want it to start next time you need it.

I’d wait until hurricane season is over before setting it up for long-term storage

Isn’t letting it run till it dies the same as draining the carb?
I’ve had the same generator since before Katrina. All I do is let it run itself out and then put it up.
Coleman Gen with a Subaru motor. First or second pull start every time and purrs like a cat.
Think I’ll add seafoam this year though. Good idea.

This is good advice, I just know me, and lots others like me and if I put it away now without taking care of it , I will forget or procrastinate and end up leaving it half full of gas for a prolonged time,

Almost but not quite, generally there is some gas that remains in the carburetor and bowl even after it running dry as the gas vapors settle back down, I just let it sit for 20 minutes or so after running out and crank on it a few times to burn all of that residue out
