Questions about LA license plates

I've noticed while driving around lately that most of the newer cars with LA plates (generic ones - not trucks, specialty or customized) start with Z (i.e. ZTB 254). My question is do the letters/numbers have specific meaning? Do the first, second, third letters and numbers indicate anything or are they just assigned in order? If they're in order, is the state about to cycle back around to AAA 000 or something?

He needs to come drop some knowledge.
I have never really thought about it before and it's made me curious lately.

Actually I remember my dad telling me (he was trying to.get a personalized so he did some research) that basically it is random, but they eliminate combos that spell words. Like cat dog etc

They're about to start with three numbers followed by three letters.

Ive always been told that certain types of vehicles will have a certain first letter on the plate. It helps identify the plate to the vehicle. for example, 4 door cars usually have a "V" as the first letter. As i scan the parking lot at work, all the regular (F150 type) trucks have a "C" and the HD trucks all have a "B".

I don't think this is right, but I'm clearly not an expert.

I know they're on a separate system. That's why I left them out.

Assigned in order. The old plates used to have a series of numbers, the letter corresponding to the vehicle's state police troop, and another series of numbers.
The license plate on my old VW was 13 K 353. Troop K used to be in Opelousas before it was absorbed be A, I, and E.

Thanks for the info.
Any idea what they're going to do when it gets to ZZZ 999 ?

Nope!
It's just the order in which they were printed.
For each letter set there are 0-999 different plates made.
I know this because I remember plate numbers from when I was a kid. And noticed all the new cars were slightly further along in the alphabet and it didn't matter where I was in the state to see that.

I feel like I've seen a "000" before.

This is absolutely correct though. At least since I started paying attention around 1995.

Good to know. I wonder if they skip around the alphabet with the first letter?
Like I said the new ones all seem to start with Z and with 999 of each letter combination being made, that seems like a shite load of plates to already be at Z.
ETA: especially when you consider that trucks, specialty and customized plates aren't being factored in

Probably start with the numbers then letters. 000 AAA

ZZZ 999
So AAA 000-999 = 1000 plates
AAB 000-999 = 1000 plates
total letters in the alphabet = 26
total combinations w/o repeats = 26^3 = 17576 = 17576*1000 = 17,576,000 plates in this arrangement
If you flip flop the numbers and letters you can double your plates. So you can have +35 million plates that are unique. And like others said, these are just for cars...so that's a lot of combinations.

NOLA.com got you covered baw: LINK
As heartofchrome said:

At some point when the combinations run out -- likely sometime next year -- the Department of Public Safety will reverse the current three letter, three number format, and go to three numbers followed by three letters (123ABC instead of ABC123), officials told NOLA.com

17,576,000 plates to be exact. Keep in mind a new one is issued for every new and used registration. Obviously not all vehicles get plates of the ABC 123 variety, but most do.

Thanks man.
Appreciate the info everyone.

Really, at least according to news reports. Not sure who downvoted that, it's true.
As of the 1st of this year they've gotten rid of the Battle of New Orleans plates and are back to the standard sunset pelican plate.
That should be just about everything you need to know about license plates.

They've added a fourth number. I saw one yesterday. Instead of ABC 123, it's ABC 1234. I wish they would have gone back to the old format.
