I just read a very interesting article that 80% of all donut shops on the west coast are owned by refugees from Cambodia who fled pol pot, despite this group only making up 0.1% of the population
Is this a west coast thing, or do you notice a lot of Asian/Cambodian owned donut shops in BR/NOLA and other cities in LA?

quote:
As the Khmer Rouge wiped out between 1.5 to 3 million Cambodians between 1975 and 1979 and displaced hundreds of thousands more, Ngoy was steadily growing his doughnut empire in America. This niche business created an economic pipeline for newly arrived refugees from Cambodia. By the 1990s, there were approximately 1,500 Cambodian-owned doughnut shops in California.
The cultural lore that explains why doughnut boxes in the west coast are often the iconic bright pink is that they were chosen by Ngoy and his business associates as a cheaper alternative to the white boxes — suggestively symbolizing the valuation of immigrant labor compared to white labor. Cambodian Americans' dominance of the doughnut scene began in Orange County and helps us see the ongoing legacies of the Cold War from a freshly glazed lens.

Just want to take this time to say my monthly (sometimes bi-monthly) RIP in peace to Jay's Donuts.

Shipley's is staffed with Illegals, and Mom & Pop's are VC owned.

All the Mary Lee's in my area look to be mostly staffed by Asian people. Few African Americans. Never see any crackers working there like this throwback legend:

In BR many Vietnamese families allow distant family members or family friends to come to America, work their butt off at their shop (Pho for example), and then eventually save enough money to start their own shop or move on to something different.
The only Cambodian doughnut shop I can think of in BR is Sambath on Essen.
The first transplant started the store who immigrated from SE Asia. Then more family came here, thus the first family helped them succeed. Then rinse and repeat. This is the extreme value of the nuclear family.

I was attempting to chat in broken English with an owner who told me there is a guy in Cali from Cambodia who did well out there and now helps other refugees get into the donut business. I feel, if I understand and it is true, that it is a sort of informal franchise system. It works because washing money in a system like this would be a breeze
