Registering Out-of-State Vehicle in Louisiana

Hoping someone could provide insight here as the DMV has been less than helpful. Just moved here 2 weeks ago. Need to register two vehicles in Louisiana, and then change our residency over.
Where do I start? Do I need to first have my insurance switched to Louisiana then proceed? I completely at a loss with trying to figure this out.
I appreciate the help.

not sure what impact this would have. If you have proof of insurance I would think that is all that matters. Now you will need to tell your insurance you moved so they can jack up your rates for being insured in La.
If you can go to one of the DMV expresses. Not sure where you are but they have one on Perkins and Siegen and I think they do out of state registration.

AUTHORITY
R.S. 47:303 A(3)
R.S. 47:303 B(1)(b)
DEFINITION
Louisiana law requires vehicles imported to this state for use upon the highways of Louisiana to be registered.
REQUIREMENTS
These vehicles will be subject to a road use tax upon registration.
Road use tax due is based upon loan value of the vehicle listed in the NADA Official Used Car Guide book, or average trade-in listed on the electronic (internet) NADA.
o When a vehicle is so new it is not listed on the NADA, road use tax due is based on the original invoice price less 15% to determine the current taxable value. If the original invoice price is not available, the operator must contact an authorized dealer and obtain the current value for the make and model of the vehicle. The operator must request documentation of the current value from the authorized dealer and retain this documentation in the file. This documentation may be in the form of an email.
Vehicles titled in another state:
To transfer a vehicle to Louisiana which has already been registered in the applicant’s name in another state, the following documents must be submitted:
A Vehicle Application (DPSMV1799) form completed and signed by the owner. NOTE: "Section F: Out of State Declaration" must be completed.
The original out-of-state certificate of title. If the original certificate of title is being held by a lienholder, a copy of the title or a vehicle registration indicating the leinholder's information must be presented with the file.
Proof of current liability insurance. The insurance company must be authorized to do business in Louisiana.

Thank you all. Cuse...did you have to register your vehicle before you did your new residency in Louisiana?

LOL I was already made aware before moving

Yes. For those that don't know, LA is one of the states that charges based on the "value" of your car. They get to decide that of course. Little known fact, since the registration is based on value you can deduct it on your taxes versus a state that has a flat fee. Something about it being a tax versus a fee. Ask your accountant.

My wife's vehicle registration expires in July, mine not until next March. Getting hers taken care of now. I will wait as long as I can for mine.
