I was diving through old newspapers about the Doolittle Raid and came across this May 1942 newspaper story in the Clarion-Ledger about the hero.

Did a lot of early testing of aviation fuel, and flew the dangerous-as-frick Gee Bee racer without killing himself.
Before flying combat in WW2.

Was a pioneer in instrument flying before it was conceivable to do so.
Man changed the aviation game before there even was one.

the Doolittle Raid
I've always wondered how accurate the movie Pearl Harbor was with this and never got around to reading about it

I used to know someone with the last name of Doolittle. The first time I asked him if he was related to Jimmy Doolittle, he was a caught off guard and a little surprised by my question.
He told me he was in fact related to Jimmy Doolittle, but anytime someone else inquired about the name “Doolittle” they asked about the Eddie Murphy movies or the Dr. Doolittle books.
Rarely did anyone bring up Jimmy Doolittle to him. I thought it was a sad example of how quickly society forgets about true heroes.

I have a core memory of walking out of the movie theater and some teenagers 3 or 4 grades ahead of me thought they had dropped the atomic bomb in the movie. My dad was like “Son, those kids are dumb. Here’s what you just watched.” He gave me a history lesson in the parking lot.

Save for the slaves some of them owned, the Doolittles are all directly related and descended from Abraham Doolittle who came over here in the 1700s. The Doolittles can trace their ancestry back towards William the Conquerer and the original 1066 invasion of Britain.
And yes, while Doolittle isn’t my last name, it was my grandmother’s maiden name and James Doolittle was her great uncle.
Additionally one of my pledge brothers started bragging about being related the guy that first bombed Tokyo. When I asked if it was James Doolittle, he said yes, and we traced back the line and found out that we were like third cousins descended from the same plantation back in like the 1880s. He also became a groomsman in my wedding.
EDIT: I was wrong in that Abraham Doolittle arrived in the colonies at Boston in 1640, so one of the first colonists in the US.

The book about the raid is a good read. I met and spoke with Mr. Bourgeois. ( don’t know his rank ). He was on one of the planes.

Doolittle is not a name befitting a man with such bravery and accomplishments, I’d suggest Jimmy Badasskicker.
