Slidell folks, we mentioned this institution of donut heaven last week in the Say something nice about Slidell thread. I just got word that Mr. George passed away. I’m told they don’t plan to re-open. Sad day.

Condolences to his family and friends. Donuts are one of life’s guilty pleasures. George did a damn fine job with his donuts.

Best donuts on the Northshore. I couldn’t leave the parking lot without eating 2 hot glaze out of the dozen.

Wow. Best donuts around. $4.95 a dozen total with tax.

Sad to hear

True. I’m a Houma native. Mr Ronnie’s was on the way to school for me. Stopped there often.

RIP George.

You aren’t a true Slidellian if you never got your arse up at 5 in the morning to get George’s donuts when they first open up.

Definitely one of the GOATs of the industry. I felt like every time I went in there someone in line always talked about him closing the doors soon. Almost like he knew what he meant and kept it open just for the community. Only doughnut shop I know of that sells out of a full stock and at least to “reloads” of glazed before 9am, consistently every weekend.

RIP Mr George.

George's hot glazed donuts were second to none.

If we're talking about the same person, he was married to a member of my in-laws family.

She still lives in Slidell but runs his donut shop in Gentilly if y'all want some donuts. Not sure if she messed with the recipe but I doubt it. She knew nothing of donuts or cooking for that matter, until he died and left her the business.

ETA:

Weird. Turns out this is a different George we are talking about. What are the chances there are two Georges that died recently and owned donut shops in Slidell?

This post has me wondering if he's the same George that once worked out of Winn-Dixie's parking lot in a small shop right on Chef Hwy. and Michoud Blvd. back in the 80's.

If so, he did make some great donuts and I found myself stopping there more times than I probably should have back in the day.

He was open in NOLA east in the 80s bc my father in law frequently went there. He moved to Slidell to open up a shop bc he said people were constantly breaking in to his shop there (shocker). He told my father in law recently he was never retiring. That he was gonna make donuts till the day he died. He said he had raised 3 successful kids, had grandkids he was proud of and making donuts is what he loved to do.

Good to know. Probably was the same guy then. I'm guessing he was in his 70's since I'm now 66 and he seemed to be several years older than me at the time.

Sunday cinnamon sugar twist donuts from George's and his old timey cash register are a vivid part of my early memories. RIP Mr. George. I guess GiGi's, Clowns, and PoBoy factory have to hold down the block.
