I'm selling a car I own to an individual. I have in my possession a clean title to the car.

Can I just do a bill of sale, and sign the title over to him? Or does my signatures have to be notorized, which means accompanying the buyer to a title transfer agency?

TIA for serious answers.

They must be notarized. Also, be sure to cancel your insurance AFTER you get rid of the car. Not before.

Notarized before a notary and two witnesses. Witnesses must sign also.

And take the license plate. You need to turn it in to the DMV within 30 days or they will put a flag on your DL. That will cost you a few hundred if they flag it.

Here's the link to report the sale directly to the LA DMV-

LINK

There are several different versions of LA Titles. Please post a picture of the title, we'll need that to tell you exactly what the procedure should be.

Not ALWAYS true. I sold a truck last week and they told me to keep the plate on it and just transferred it to the new owner

Man that seems like a hassle, here in TN you just fill out and sign the title and give it to the new owner.

unless rules have changed over the past two years, a LA title is and can be your bill of sale. you do not need a separate bill of sale. easiest way is both parties go see a notary together. If not possible, get the seller to sign and print name on the back of the title and get a picture of the sellers driver's license. The buyer takes it to a notary and completes the transaction.

I agree. You can get it transferred. When giving advice to someone that is unfamiliar with the process, I just tell them to turn in the tags to avoid cost to them or confusion.

Most States are like TN. If you do it that way there is no way State government can fleece money from a normal transaction, or have lawyers get their hands in it as well. I bet you don't have bs brake tags/vehicle inspection stickers on your windshields either.

It depends upon the state you in whether or not a notary is required, but you need either the title or bill of sale to be notarized. The actually bill of sale is not required to be notarized, but if you are doing one you might as well do the other. They have notaries that will travel to you, or you can even do it at some UPS places I believe. The buyer is the one that generally pays these fees.. or you could split the cost up.

I have sold vehicles just fine, even in Louisiana, without a notary of either though. I just made sure of the very last step I will provide on here.

You can make up your own bill of sale or use these generic ones that I typically use.

Bill of Sale without Notary

Another Generic Bill of Sale

Remember you need to have the original title of your vehicle and sign the back of it to his name. Just verify with him he is who he says is, maybe ask for his license.. and you will need his address for the vehicle transfer any ways.

You need to fill out this odometer disclosure if the vehicle is less than 10 years old

Odometer Disclosure

And lastly, this is the most important thing you must do which will protect you from the moment they drive the vehicle off.

Fill out this Notice of Transfer

^ This takes you off the hook of the car and puts it directly into their name. You will need their info to fill this out like their address they provided.

Once you complete this last step.. you can then remove your insurance. The DMV will recognize this last step immediately when you enter it online and it will show in their systems.

Either way the stat3e will get their money when the new owner registers the vehicle and pays the sales tax, and fees.
