Catholic, I have a further complaint. These foreign, heavy, thick-accented priests make tuning in exceedingly difficult. I mean, would it kill the Diocese to maybe pay for a good dialect coach for some of these dudes? I’m sure they spend a lot of time working on these homilies… if they want literally ANYONE to listen past a few sentences, I think speaking just a smidge more understandably would be more paramount.

Totally agree. Every once in a while we get the Indian priest and it’s difficult to understand.

Growing up in MS our priest was from Dublin so he had a thick Irish accent which made for a great mass at a Mississippi Catholic Church

Agreed.

That isn’t to say that there aren’t great modern songs, there are. But a lot of times they fail to grasp the gravity of it all.

although our local mainline Protestant church has revamped the hymnal in recent years to include “modern” music, we still sing a lot of the traditional stuff

yesterday we had a brass quintet, sang a hymn that was written in 1784, had our best soprano sing and offertory composed by Mozart, and closed with the “Hallelujah” from Beethoven’s Mount of Olives

of course it helps when your musical director is an extremely talented and dedicated classically trained pianist/organist/conductor who has been part of the church for 49 years

Here is an oldie. It has been over 40 years since I have heard this one song at mass.

I prefer the traditional hymns with music provided by a piano and an organ, as opposed to the new "praise music" with guitars and drums. I seem to be in the minority but then again, I'm at an age that would be considered old by most on this board.

Our church used to have an early contemporary service with the band and a traditional late morning service with the choir & hymns. Attendance for both fell off after Covid, and then the riff in the Methodist Church split/drama. Now it's combined service in the middle morning. The band plays the first half of the service, then the choir comes in during "the children's moment" and there's hymns the rest of the way. I'm a traditional hymns person too. I do like some of the newer songs though. It's a good mix. I just wish you didn't have to standup for about 20min straight while the band plays. These dress shoes hurt my back

What do you mean? You don’t like the modern worship songs? The lyrics are really easy to memorize.

There’s always the church band guy that thinks he’s a whole lot better singer than he really is.

This combined with people judging me for my nice fishing shirt and the old lady 3-4 words behind in reciting prayers are the main reason I just worship from home.

You simply can’t do any better than pg.110 in the old Red Hymnal.

dudes with skinny jeans and skinny ties absolutely hammering those G chords on the electric guitar, accompanied by chubby girls in flowy clothes using the right hand to hold the mic and the left hand doing the open palm holding up air thing

He's probably trying to "sucker punch" you by acting like he didn't know the name of those books. BUT...if he didn't, sucker punch shouldn't have an opinion if he didn't know what those "books" were called.

Irony is that the young people don’t want that music either. Younger generation seems to like the more traditional music as well.

i'm 41 and remember the praise/hymn music battles of the 80s and 90s.

i never thought i'd say this considering my opinions as as a teenager, but at this point in life, I'd prefer 80/20 hymn/praise. Even then, most of my appreciation of praise is pre 2010 or so.

I can't keep up with all the new music that elevation/hillsong/bethel comes out with. Plus, most of their theology is pretty dicey, yet I hear it in reformed conservative churches all the time.

ETA: my church doesn't sing anything i have an overt theological bent against, but if you listen to what most of the pastors are saying, it's feel good prosperity gospel stuff. The dude from Elevation is wildly talented as a musician and songwriter. I will say that.
