Are horizontal vortices a particular sign of strength?

Yep, very indicative of a strong tornado. Usually see that with your EF4 and EF5 type tornadoes.

Appears to me the bad cell immediately close to Memphis will miss to the north

The badass line behind it isn't missing anything

I still can’t believe that Brandon Copic video. That’s a once in a lifetime moment I’m sure.

It was a multiple vortex tornado. It has multiple vortices that rotate around the center rotation. Very indicative of a strong, violent tornado.

That’s what I was trying to ask. Fascinating and terrifying.

He was way too close, in a situation with training tornadic storms. He had two storms with observed tornadoes directly to his southwest. If he so much as just gets blown off the road and stuck he is fricked if he doesn't get picked up. Dumb move, but he got the shots.

For anyone in the path of these storms headed into nightfall, these storms haven't been the best with radar presentation. We've had multiple tornadoes obaerved on storms that otherwise didn't look all that impressive on radar. Now that it is dark there will be less visual confirmation from chasers, and more reliance on radar. Don't take a chance with any of these storms tonight.

I definitely didn't think that tornado Brandon saw had enough horizontal motion to make me comfortable there. It was hard to tell if it was coming right at him until it got too close. If anyone chases storms, at minimum must be able to read velocity data well and have VERY good map awareness, which a lot of younger kids do not. They can't pick out every state oftentimes these days.

Generally speaking, if you can't see the tornado moving......it is coming right at you.
