There were 2 high end department stores back in the day right?

There was a 'Godchaux' and a "Goudchaux/Maison Blanche"?

What was the difference? Were they actually the same store or were they 2 completely different companies?

From wikipedia:

quote:

nstead, three of the seven existing Maison Blanche stores, as well as the name, were purchased by Goudchaux's, Inc. of Baton Rouge, owned by the Sternberg brothers. (Goudchaux's should not be confused with Godchaux's, a specialty store based in New Orleans). Operating as Goudchaux/Maison Blanche, the new company eventually reopened the original Canal Street flagship in 1984, leasing three floors from the new owners.

Meh, I would say that Goudchaux/Maison Blanche would be considered a relatively high end department store back in the day. That industry has undergone an enormous amount of change.

In addition to the Baton Rouge Goudchaux's that bought Maison Blanche, there was another New Orleans-based clothing/department store named Godchaux's (one 'u') founded by Leon Godchaux before the Civil War. The main store was on Canal with branches in all of the suburban malls. Godchaux's closed in the late 1980s.

The same Leon Godchaux also owned the Godchaux Sugar company shich was supplied by his several plantations and boasting at one time the largest sugar refinery in the country.

I don't think there was a Macy's in BR back then. And I hope you don't think Macy's is high end now. It's pretty trashy to be honest.
