If she gets a free seat, do I get a pass if my bag is a bit over 50lbs?
I've always said that over weight baggage fees should be a combination of bag weight and passenger weight.....

It is open seating... how does this work? If i walk by someone that big, i am choosing not to sit next to them. Do they just sell one less ticket on the plane?
After many years of traveling, I often find the fatties are usually in boarding group C, and are one of the last people to board --- and by that time, you are already seated and committed.
I had one fattie that did exactly just that to me. I was miserable and she spilled over into my seat and armrest. What made it even worse is that she had an entire pizza she was holding and broke it open just after take-off.
I imagine in order for SWA to accommodate this new policy, they're going to undersell their seats by 3 or 4, and raise the prices to make up the difference.

The last two times I've flown Southwest, I've watched an entire bachelorette party walk past me only to end up next to the fat friend. Delta is just, by far, a better option now

Yeah.... That's going to go over well on full flights
I can see a full scale revolt.

Oompah Loompah Doopity Dane,
Now get your fat arse off of our plane,
Oompah Loompah Doopity Dold,
They should stick you, in the cargo hold
What do you get when you cater to fats,
An angry mob that will hit you with bats,
What do you get when you give them free seats,
Stock price as low as an elephant's feet,
I don't like the look of it
Oompah Loompah Doopity Dong,
They need to ride on a voyage this long,
Oompah Loompah Doopity Dane,
Book them a freight car on a long train!

What if we just identify as plus-sized?
Posted on 12/14/23 at 8:50 am to bad93ex
They should have to pay for those seats. But at least normal folks want have to be sandwiched in by those hogs.

Prices go will go up due to reduced tickets being purchased, and we will all pay extra to subsidize these fatties. Fatties should not be a protected class

The title is a little misleading. They aren't giving them a free seat. They are simply making accomadations during boarding if the plane isn't full. Southwest has that weird boarding policy where people grab their own seats. Normally the windows and aisles get taken first and the people in the final boarding priority group all get stuck in the middle seats. I guess Southwest is just reserving an aisle seat for them if they are fat and the flight has empty seats.
But these people need to buy a first class ticket up to a certain weight or not fly beyond a certain weight.
I will say I rarely see obese people on flights. Tall and bulky guys, sure. Women who are big boned, sure. Dad guts, absolutely. But morbidly obese is rare.

quote:Its bad because they're going to have to make up for the lost revenue by charging more for each ticket. So now the rest of us get to subsidize the lard asses who get multiple seats for the same price you pay for one seat.
Conflicted on this. Good that you will no longer have the fatty's blubber touching you for an entire flight. Bad that it's setting a standard that being fat is perfectly acceptable
Airlines need to stop being afraid of pissing off a couple of fat asses and blue haired freaks on social media and put out a policy that says "our seats are 18" wide. If you cannot fit between the armrests without encroaching on the seat space next to you, you will not be allowed to board the plane unless you purchased an additional seat at the time of booking"

Yup. Delta is the better option.

I wish airlines would make people step on scales and charge them extra if they are over 180 lbs or some shite
ETA: I figured 180 lbs was the average weight of an American male but HOLY SHITE I just googled it.
That's embarrassing.

Not only are American men carrying more body fat than prior generations, they've also increased in height and weight. The average American man stands 69 (nice) inches tall and weighs 199.8 pounds with a waist circumference of 40.5 inches
That's embarrassing.

So they are giving them seats to allow for extra girth, but how do you get away from the smell of someone that takes up 3 seats? Can you imagine how much someone that large sweats in the summertime? Fat cheese and tittie biscuits will have that whole flight gagging.

Or add your bag and yourself together. It's absolute bullshite anyone can just walk on regardless of weight, but everyone pays for an extra 6lbs in their bag

I would like their explicit definition of “person of size”. That technically is any person and I’m guessing we are now all entitled to extra free seats to ensure our comfort.

If we keep conceding to these lazy POS people they’ll never have an incentive to lose weight.

A plus-size travel expert and TikToker, Jae'lynn Chaney, told Fox News Digital it was an important move to include people in the "super fat" category. "Super fat is how we identify," Chaney, business owner of Jae Bae Productions, said. "There's a spectrum of fatness. And as a super fat individual, you start needing different accommodations… I just felt really happy that there was something like this for people."
They identify as “super fat”. But I bet if you called them that, they’d try to cancel you

Most of these people board early anyway with "medical conditions"

Treating weight issues as a disability.

placate the dregs of society, the weirdos, the fatties, and the purple hair mob by placing the burden (increased prices) onto the rest of society.
