Students are increasingly refusing to go to school. It’s becoming a mental health crisis.

School avoidant behavior, also called school refusal, is when a school-age child refuses to attend school or has difficulty being in school for the entire day. Several mental health experts told USA TODAY it has become a crisis that has gotten worse since the COVID-19 pandemic.
"There's no book on this, it's not spoken about," said Demsky, whose son declined to be interviewed by USA TODAY but gave his mother permission to share their story. "It's very scary and parents feel a sense of helplessness."
The two continued to struggle with school avoidance for four years with little guidance. In 2014, she created a website to offer families the help and support she couldn't find. The site eventually turned into the School Avoidance Alliance, which spreads awareness and educates learning facilities and families of school avoidant children.

Some research suggests as few as 1% of students are school avoidant, while organizations like the School Avoidance Alliance estimate 5% to 28% of students in the country exhibit school avoidant behaviors at some point in their lives.

It is high time that we re-tooled our education system.

With all the teachers fricking, you'd think attendance was up.

Fine. Rework the child labor laws so that if you don’t want to go to high school, you have to go to work. No government handouts for the lazy

This used to be cured with a prescription of two arse whippings and call me in the morning.
Now we have to search little Johnny’s fefes to validate his behaviors and beliefs.

Where was this mental health problem when I was being forced to go to school every day?

I always went to school because I played football and baseball and wanted to practice. One day in between seasons I decided I didn't want to go to school. My father very much to my surprise said "Ok". I should've known something was up. He got my arse up and made me help milk the cows, and I had to split and carry firewood for the rest of the day. I never once asked to stay home from school again.

My wife is a teacher and they have little shits at her school with “Oppositional defiant disorder” and they have to give them “accommodations” because of it. So basically the kid is an a-hole who the parents let get away with it then make it known to the school that the little a-hole has to get special treatment

How much do the teachers hate those kids?

A lot of parents need re-tooling first

Is this outside of the norm?
Feel like 1 out of 100 kids ditching school is pretty normal?

The organization that wants funding estimates the problem is exponentially worse than it is? I'm shocked!

This is astounding!
After letting kids go to "school" on a laptop in their pajamas for two years with zero consequences if they fail, they now no longer want to sit in a classroom and, you know.... try.

It is because parents are more concerned with their kids liking them than raising their kids to be productive adults.

How bout we retool parenting kids and quit pandering to them? Kick them in their asses and make them do things. Especially things they don’t like. Worked for millions of kids before these.
