Go a text this morning
Louisiana Toll Services, our records show that your vehicle has an outstanding toll charge. To prevent further fees totaling $75.59, please settle the due amount of $7.59 at //mysunpasstollsinvoices.com
Checked this place online and saw same text as a scam obviously. For a split second I thought it was legit because I passed on the 8 beltway toll yesterday, and thought to myself "dang they are fast" How'd they get my number to send me the bill.

I don’t understand how these things are continuously allowed. It seems quite easy for carriers to police.

It was surprising. Because I just passed through a toll yesterday. So how did it know to text me(how tf they got my number tbw) right after I passed on a legitimate toll yesterday too. Huge coincidence. Nice trick.

They probably send to a bunch of different numbers hoping to catch some people in this same situation who are "slipping" and react before investigating the text message.
ETA: Even if they have a 75% click-through or call fail rate, the 25% they snag can represent a large amount of revenue.

Exactly
Makes me wonder if someone employed by the actual toll I passed through yesterday is somehow involved in the scam. The timing was flawless and had me for a moment. Even the amount was very similar. I went through 4 eztag check points tolling 6 bucks before taxes and just said to myself, ill get a bill for it and just pay it when i get it.

SunPass will always send something in the mail.. It took about a month to get my bill from a Mid-July trip to Destin.

Most obvious is that SunPass is Florida’s tolling company and it says Louisiana Toll Services in the scam text.

Beings that the 8 Beltway is in Texas and that you received a bill from Louisiana Toll Services did not provide you a clue ?

quote:well not right at once because I passed through Houston area yesterday on the beltway heading to Louisiana. Once I clicked on site, I knew it was a scam because you couldn't click on anything but the "pay" function so I got online and saw the same text etc as scams.

The fact that I actually passed through a toll yesterday had me for a minute thinking they got in touch pretty quick. I don't know how tolls work these days as I hadn't passed through one in my personal vehicle in a long time. In my career, I pass through tolls alot but I have a toll pass for every toll in America.

sadly the majority of people just do not pay attention or read things.
my wife works in a Fraud center for banks/CU's, and they get close to a 1000 calls a day, if not more - and most are situations like this.
she had a woman call her the other day that got an email from Paypal concerning a bill for Bitcoin purchased. the Lady sat on the phone with a "pay pal" employee for 6 hours before she hung up, but in that time she provided him everything including accounts, and he was transfering money to various Paypal, cashapps etc.
the Lady even admitted to my wife, she doesn't have a paypal account and had no idea what Bitcoin was, but got afraid because of how the email was worded.
the amount of fraud through Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and others is staggering.
2 rules of thumb -
1) if it is too good to be true, it is - noone is gonna give you a 500 dishware set and only have you pay 6 bucks for shipping
2) stop and read the message and apply objective thinking and common sense.

For some reason my wife’s vehicle doesn’t register with sunpass. She has a Louisiana lsu license plate. We go to Pensacola beach multiple times a year and have never gotten a letter for a fee. Also never been ticketed in dfw either. If I’m in my truck I can go online within a few days and pay my fee.

They almost got me. I blew through some Sun Pass tolls recently without a pass, and I forgot to pay it. I got the text and thought it was nice that they reminded me lol. Clicked the link and the site on the text didn't work. Googled the actual sunpass site and realized the text was a scam. I actually owed MORE than what the scam text said lmao

I don't think they send letters. At least I've never gotten one. But if you go to their website and enter your license plate info, it will most likely show a balance for you.

My mom hasn't been to Florida in ten years and is receiving these.

Nope. Go to the site and put in license number and nothing. And yes they do send letters. One time I forgot to go online and pay and I got a letter with a fee. Been all over DFW and Pensacola and yet to ever get one in her vehicle. Don’t know why but I probably owe $100’s if they ever send one

SunPass has some sort of reciprocal agreement with tolling authorities in other states (GA’s Peach Pass for example). I bet they get a lot of people who simply think the charge is being assessed through their local tolling authority.

She can thank the DMV for their service in protecting her personal data!
