Texas labor laws and the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever been told……..

A. Finally broke down and read up on Texas labor laws. Basically you’re kind of screwed. Overtime, breaks, lunch breaks, nothing is protected by law. I’ve always heard Texas is not a “right to work” state. But never heard the others. I know in Texas an employer can fire without cause. HR policies and poor optics compel most places to give reason etc. but that’s it.
B. I came to this a week ago after changes at work. Work is a hospital setting. I ask anyone in ANY setting, what’s the most ridiculous “F You” thing you’ve ever been told by a boss, manager, supervisor, admin, business owner? Whatever your supervisor might be. Mine was a week ago. Being told my morning trip to the on site cafe to buy a bottle of water. Talking the time it takes me to walk there, but the water, and walk back. 3-5 minutes. It was a “problem”. In my 30 plus years of work. High school and college knuckle head jobs to career. I’ve never been told something so foolish.
Give some examples to see how much I am over reacting.
IB4 because I’m healthcare
Never made a tik tok video.
Not a woman. You don’t want pics.

Overtime is governed by FLSA, which applies in Texas as well. Most right to work states don’t dictate breaks/lunch but overtime isn’t a choice.

I imagine he's talking about if you're on salary. Hopefully he's making enough money on salary to warrant working more than 40 hours.

Right to Work has to do with unions and closed shops.
Lots of anti-Union states require lunch breaks, at least for young workers.

There are no federal mandated holidays

FLSA defines which employees are exempt and not exempt (salary vs hourly). Many employers (especially smaller ones) violate this law. They are just a report away from lots of trouble. It’s not just about how much you make but also your duties and responsibilities. Can’t just decide that a regular Joe worker should be salary because he makes a lot.

Proof reading this would have been a positive.
If you mean you have a ten minute break and it wouldn't allow you to walk to the store and back in time, I would just do it anyway. If you work in a hospital and aren't the janitor or in housekeeping, you have the power. What are they going to do? Fire you? If you show up on time and work hard you're better than 90% of the people they could replace you with.
Otherwise, if the biggest problem you're facing is a bottle of water - bring one. Or two and have a back-up supply.

Is all the US at-will employment?
Stop being a communist

What is your education level / job? As long as you’re getting your work done I don’t see why a 5 minute water run is an issue, depending on your job
This sounds like it would happen to a cafeteria worker or janitor though. And not if you were administration / RN level but idk

I hate to break it to you baw but your boss has much bigger problems with you than your little water break.

Are you on call for patients? Does your boss need to ask you a question and get an answer within 1 minute? Do your coworkers need help with an issue? I can think of lots of scenarios where it's not ideal for an employee to just disappear for 5 minutes.

Have you thought about bringing bottles of water from home and not buying one at the cafe?
Since cases of bottled water are $5-7, it would be cheaper and more efficient.

You’re correct. I don’t know why I listed it that way.
I worded it poorly. I was getting at mandated overtime. An employer tells you you have to stay or gives you an amount of work that can’t be completed in 8 hours. You can be fired for refusing the overtime. In Texas at least. If I understand correctly.
