The CIA A12 (SR71 Blackbird eats its dust)

or thrust, or whatever.
Anyway.
I give you the A12 aka- Cygnus
They could outperform an SR-71
Their "nest" was Groom Lake (and anything from Groom is cool!)
They were owned and operated by Spook Central, the CIA
They were a secret until 1981
Their design and fabrication was nothing short of genius (They came before the SR-71s)
The only people who've flown in A-12s are CIA pilots. Congressmen (yuk!) have been given rides in SR-71s
The two A-12 crash sites on public landhave been found by the public, but remain shrouded in secrecy

If these are the specs of a 30 year old airframe just think about what is up there flying today for CIA/AF

115 mph faster in the link, although that's still a tiny difference at Mach 3.
Either way, I bet the fuel economy at those speeds is phenomenal.

The true top speed of the SR-71 is unknown. Pilots have stated it was always holding more power in reserve. But the plane was already so fast there was never any need.

Reminds me of the air speed check story from one of the blackbird pilots. Fun read.

Yet another version of the AR-15

Believe it or not, most economical speed for these things was wide open because the engine acted as a ram jet, lots of air and not much fuel going through the engine at Mach 3. Now tying up to speed to get the engine to act like a ram jet was the fuel guzzler.

that was a great article
