I know Katrina is a very tough subject for many, and understandably so. However, this piece of the Katrina story has always fascinated me as a weather enthusiast, and I thought some others may also find it interesting. As we approach the 11th anniversary of Katrina, I found it a good time to share this.
On the night of August 27th, 2005 Hurricane Katrina reached it's peak strength with sustained winds of 175 mph (Category 5). On the morning of August 28th (less than 24 hours before Katrina's landfall) meteorologist Robert Ricks of the National Weather Service in Slidell, LA issued the following unprecedented warning which became known as "The Bulletin":

I remember reading that warning. I was already in Houston evacuated.
I sat there staring at it, mind racing. It was a terrifying moment.

That truly is one terrifying warning

Let's hope we never need one of those warnings again.
My dad was 16 when Camille hit southeastern LA in the middle of the night. He still has nightmares about it.

That warning saved countless lives. A copy of it is in a museum in D.C. I think

Scary.
Kind of missed describing the whole flooding/tidal surge aspect.
Perhaps his area of expertise is wind?

I remember some pretty ominous warnings although it may not have been that one in particular. I had never seen a warning like that before and I hopefully never will again.
That whole year sucked.

As far as New Orleans goes, remove the failure of the levees and the only serious damage would have been some wind damage but the area wouldn't have been inhabitable for weeks, not nearly one half of homes were wind damaged or destroyed, matter of fact hardly none of what was in that warning happened. ETA: in New Orleans

I think it was a strong category 2 storm when it made landfall....but the storm surge was more in line with a Cat 5 storm.

If you have time, take it, and listen to the this podcast. I think it's the second story in the podcast and the longest and best (although the entire podcast is amazing)

While I don't remember this particular warning, I will never forget the feeling I had that Sunday morning at 6 am when I turned on the tv and saw the size of that bitch of a hurricane. Burst into tears immediately and called my dad in DC for advice.
