Anyone on the board around when this happen? Not much coverage on it just curious if anyone remembers what it was like.

On Thursday, November 20, 1980, the drill assembly of a Texaco contracted oil rig, just offshore of the salt dome-caused Jefferson Island (itself in the east southeast section of Lake Peigneur), pierced an inactive third level of the Diamond Crystal Salt Company salt mine. The hole produced a vortex that drained the lake into the mine, filling the enormous caverns that had been left by the removal of salt. Lake Peigneur Disaster

My grandfather was in the mine when it happened. Everyone in there made it out.

I remember it pretty well.

I was in high school when that happened.at the time, there was no internet, so we didn’t hear about it until the next day. We were all amazed, but no one died, so the whole event has been largely forgotten.

Jefferson Island still has the house out in the lake, with the chimney sticking up.

I know LA has numerous salt domes, but didn't know:

quote:

Salt domes are prime locations for drilling for oil and natural gas, as the salt is nearly impenetrable and the upward movement of the dome bends the rock strata above and around it, creating traps for these resources.

I called on a tree nursery right on the banks of the lake. Missed the event but they have photos up in their office. Damn amazing.

The Ged Oilfield, south of Vinton, is where it was determined that this was the case. The presence of oil was discovered when drilling water wells for cattle on the Gray Ranch. It ended up being the most prolific oilfield per surface acre in the history of oil. What happened was the water in the aquifer has a "kerosene" smell and taste to it. Matilda Gray, daughter of the owner ended becoming the richest woman in America as a result.

The first contract I scored as director of marketing for a national contractor was the dismantlement and demolition of the mine above it. It was quite profitable for us the Diamond Crystal Salt bore partial responsibility by giving wrong coordinates to Texaco.

The area breached had been leaking some for years because that horizontal shaft had gotten near the edge of the salt dome.

Diamond Crystal operated the mill above it for 3 years to try to get its lawsuit reward increased. Salt was barged in for this.

The story I got from the superintendent was that two young miners had snuck away to smoke a joint in the abandoned area of the mine where the leak occurred. They noticed it was leaking more than normal then warned everyone else.

Also, the president of our company lived in Tampa and visited the job often because of the food. We hired the superintendent's wife as a clerk/timekeeper and she like to cook for the crew. After one trip John, the president, laughed about how she complained that she would have cooked something better than the crawfish tails she had cleaned that morning from the crawfish boil the day before, so all she had was a crawfish salad for him, wth a pound of tail meat. He said meals there were like heaven

I was alive when it happened but nowhere near the area. I can remember the footage on TV with the water in a huge swirl pulling grown trees off the banks as they collapsed and getting swallowed up in the hole.

It really was amazing that nobody was lost in that event since there were workers in boats and barges in the area if I recall correctly.

I know for sure there were miners in the salt mine under that lake. That area is still active to this day with a lot of bubbling going on in the water that indicates things still aren't right.
